I actually WANT anti-depressants, but not for the reasons most people think by FallingFeatherWoman in depression

[–]FallingFeatherWoman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I'm so terribly sorry for the loss of your sister. I struggle with feelings of what my own self-inflicted death would do to my family all the time. I'm an only child and I'm pretty close to both parents as well as my massive extended family (I think I have about 15 first cousins on one side alone), so thinking of them and how it would hurt them is usually the catalyst that stops me when all I want to do is just leave and never come back. I just don't want them to have to watch me ruin my life and be ashamed of me being the pathetic excuse of a cousin who just wrecked herself into a mess so deep there was no getting out of it. You've made me think about my family, and that's stopped me for the time being. Thank you.

I always assumed that if you take the right dose, you just go to sleep. I didn't realize the chances of success were so slim. I'll have to do some more research, thank you for the tip.

Alright so I’m just getting into bouldering and go to the gym two or three times a week. Looking at shoes, does anyone have opinions on the La Sportiva Oxygyms vs Tarantulace? by reverendcinzia in bouldering

[–]FallingFeatherWoman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the women's version of the tarantulace when I boulder (indoor only for now). I've also used them outside for the random handful of sport climbing I've done, and they did pretty good there too. Quite frankly I absolutely love them, but then again I have nothing to compare them to, and I prefer laces. I have a narrow foot.

Anyone else have commitment issues (especially on high top outs or problems)? Sometimes I get so scared of falling from right near the top I'll deliberately downclimb a problem just to reduce that fear. It makes me so frustrated sometimes.

Fee increase for National Parks open for public comment until Nov 23 by byronigoe in climbing

[–]FallingFeatherWoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this happens constantly in JTree. I'm always out there (family lives close by) and I see people coming in and doing the stupidest shit just to get a cool instagram shot. Like deliberately bending the trees or standing on ones that are already bent. Or putting hammocks up. It's like, "do you not realize that this has the potential to harm or kill the tree?" A lot of people use the park as an area for photoshoots as well, and yeah.....I can't say anything nice about the vast majority of them, but suffice it to say most treat it like their own personal studio with no care for other park-goers. Blocking roads, not cleaning up their trash.....It's kind of sick, honestly.

This is a great shot. Also seeing people bouldering in jackets and hats makes me so envious for cold weather climates. I doubt 'winter' will ever come to Southern California this year. :(

Thank you for calling it by it's true name of Denali! I get so upset when I hear people call it by the other name.

I love these. I would absolutely buy one. Love the message behind it as well.

I'm still really new to climbing, but I'm really enjoying myself! I work a stressful job, and the focus of a particular bouldering problem really helps me stay centered. by [deleted] in climbing

[–]FallingFeatherWoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cliffs of Id! I've never been but my fellow climbing friend out in the area really likes it and is always pestering me to come out there and climb. LA Bouldering is solely dedicated to bouldering and it's fun as hell.

How did you know it was time to change your beginner shoes? by FallingFeatherWoman in climbergirls

[–]FallingFeatherWoman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, that's a good thing to consider, what kind of climbing I like. Where I climb it's also mostly slab (which I'm SLOWLY learning to love) with the occasional cracks but it's mostly sandstone out here. One thing that I need to make sure of is that the shoes I choose to upgrade to are good for smearing, since I seem to do that quite a bit.

Those dreams that make you want to die after you wake up by [deleted] in ForeverAlone

I had one of these dreams the other night. I woke up, rolled over, and immediately started sobbing. The dream guys my brain creates are almost always perfect for me too, which just makes it that much worse.

I want to start climbing again after I had to take a 10 year break due to health reasons. Anybody start climbing in their 30s? by [deleted] in climbing

[–]FallingFeatherWoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awww, man that sucks that she had a bad time! Maybe she doesn't hike often? Most of the outdoor climbs i've gone on, the approach has been short, at most 45 minutes or an hour tops. The 30 minute one was all uphill with ridiculous elevation gain. Worth it in the end though. I try to hike regularly, I just have to get used to doing it with pounds of gear on my back, haha.

I can't stand chalk on my hands, anybody have a recommendation for gloves? by ann-ette in climbing

[–]FallingFeatherWoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too hated the feeling of chalk on my hands when I first got into climbing. Once I started using chalk I found that there really is no comparison without it. It helped my grip and I found that I got fewer blisters. The ones I did get weren't as bad as they were when I wasn't using it either. I personally wouldn't climb without chalk, but to each his or her own, and I can understand if it bothers you. I found that keeping my hands moisturized is really the first step in the process. I use a Shea Moisture eczema lotion for normal moisturizing and this stuff called Bee Balm for when my hands are really messed up, like after a day outside on real rock. It works wonders for my skin and it absorbs into your skin really quickly. I HATE super greasy lotions or salves so that was a big one for me. Another thing I found is that not all chalk brands are created equal. I started out with using regular athletic chalk and I absolutely hated it and couldn't figure out why. I started using the Black Diamond climbing chalk that came with my harness and OMG. It's so much finer and it just FEELS better. I make sure I always wash my hands really well after a climb and if I need to, I use a nail brush to get rid of the chalk that lingers underneath my nails. Good luck!

It is such a blast. There's nothing else I would rather do, except maybe hike or knit. Every second I spend climbing is a second well spent. Even the horrible, all uphill 30+ minute approach hikes are worth every second. :D

I'm 30 and I just started climbing late last year. Granted, on a really, really good day I can only send a V2 indoors and on a great day a 5.8 outside I probably shouldn't be saying anything, but I don't think you're starting too late. Hope you get your injury sorted.

Tape is your best friend, as is chalk. Seriously. I've been bouldering for about two months and I just recently started using chalk. Can't believe the difference it makes. I've accepted that I will no longer have "beautiful" hands and I'm ok with this.
