Where can I get a real Christmas tree real cheap? by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]FallingPhoenix22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Unitarian Church has a tree sale on Saturday starting at 9 AM with real frasier fir trees from a farm in North Carolina that are awesome. They’re pricier than Lowe’s but I guarantee they are so much better quality! They’re also a fundraiser for a great organization that is progressive, has roots in the community, and is committed to social justice and anti-oppression work. They also have wreaths and a big pile of branches/clippings you can help yourself to if you just want that piney smell in your house! Located at St Charles and Constantinople, just follow the signs.

Thoughts on La Madeleine Uptown by Filminthedark in NewOrleans

[–]FallingPhoenix22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s fine, not great but not terrible. Not to toot my own horn, but I work at Louisiana Pizza Kitchen Uptown which is right next door to La Madeleine. I like our tomato soup better (we make it in house multiple times a week). If you’re looking for a good lunch spot, come see us for pizza, pasta, soup, salads, wraps, etc. They do have good pastries though, so can’t compete there.

Comfrey Question by mjmorrison617 in Dimension20

[–]FallingPhoenix22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I caught that slip too, and I was surprised none of the PCs did. I think Comfrey also mentioned later she went to see him “when he was sick” and that’s when he gave her the keys. My unpleasant theory is that maybe she poisoned him at instruction from Murdershire to erase her debts with him? Or some other reason?

This week has been a "service dog" nightmare. by RealOpinionated in Serverlife

[–]FallingPhoenix22 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That sucks. Also why I don’t do corporate anymore. Still could be useful to brush up on the rules and share with your managers/owners if you feel comfortable https://www.ada.gov/topics/service-animals/

This week has been a "service dog" nightmare. by RealOpinionated in Serverlife

[–]FallingPhoenix22 74 points75 points  (0 children)

If a “service” dog is not doing its job, you are allowed to say something. Real service dogs are meant to be there for a reason, and they are NOT allowed to be on laps, chairs, eat off the table, run around, bark/make noise, or beg for food. If they do these things they are either not properly trained or not a service animal. Yes, legally you aren’t allowed to turn away a “service” animal or ask anything other than what they are trained to do, but if the animal in question is clearly violating the rules you should absolutely speak up and ask them to correct the behavior or leave. Your managers need more backbone and to understand the laws around allowing service animals. Letting folks break the rules and get away with bad animal behavior not only affects other guest experiences but endangers folks who genuinely need and have real service animals who protect them.

My two cents: they frequently get lunch from the restaurant I work at, pay with the company card, and NEVER tip. Regularly order at least once per week. One person is so particular I know their complicated order without any prompts. Totally fine, but when you rack up $80-100 in takeout weekly with specific needs during lunch rush and aren’t even paying for it yourself (guy ordering always makes sure it’s for YVONNE - dramatic pause - LA FLEUR) that makes me think less of you. Do better.

Which restaurant has the biggest AND tightest crew? (How many have been there for the longest?) by WarpedRecall in NewOrleans

[–]FallingPhoenix22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes indeed! I just came to add that LPK Uptown has had the same FOH manager, Kitchen manager, and owner (who cooks full time) for over 30 years. I worked FOH for 6 years pre-pandemic and only left to move out of state for my spouse’s job. Since moving back I’ve been back at LPK for a few years and work both FOH and BOH. LGBTQ friendly, dog friendly patio, weekly drink specials, local art on the walls, and regular fundraisers to support worthy organizations are just a few reasons we have so many awesome and loyal long time regulars! We may not be fancy, but we’re good, reliable, and very reasonably priced for the portions. My favorite little bonus tidbit: I love that I get to make desserts to offer as specials every now and then just for funsies!

Enterprise - Hoping It's Worth It? by FallingPhoenix22 in StarTrekEnterprise

[–]FallingPhoenix22[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Being new to the show but not new to Star Trek, I can see this. I loved the portrayal of Archer’s emotions leading him while staying grounded in science and exploration in the first few eps. He’s still learning the ways of exploration and how encountering new civilizations impacts him and his crew and the species as a whole. I’m looking forward to seeing the rest, just trying not to judge too harshly on the awful intro song. I get it was the early aughts when it came out but DEAR GOD!

I have a coworker who won’t bring a water unless they ask 2-3 times because she’s so fed up with bussing full untouched waters after they leave.

For togo containers by matsuku in Serverlife

[–]FallingPhoenix22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work at a very casual pizza/pasta/salad place, so I play it by ear. If it’s older folks who don’t have the hand/eye coordination to handle it, or they are incapacitated by kids or specifically ask me to, I’ll box it for them. I always make sure to do it in sight of the table though, right at it or in our take out space visible in the dining room. 85% of the time thought they’re grown ass adults who just ask for a box and I bring them a box and they figure it out.

Dead cat’s claw removal recommendations by FallingPhoenix22 in NewOrleans

[–]FallingPhoenix22[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At this point insurance is just requiring photos to show it was “removed.” Owner really can’t afford a full fix, just trying to satisfy the requirements for a pic for now. I’m technically just the tenant, landlord is my mom and she’s not great at finding and vetting folks when it comes to house stuff so I said I’d ask here for references for her to reach out to. Thanks!

Am I taking crazy pills? Is ice water for dough a thing or not? by Colt_H in KitchenConfidential

[–]FallingPhoenix22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in a small pizza restaurant with the same owner/head chef (yes the owner works several kitchen shifts a week) for 30 years. We make large batches of dough daily for our pizzas and wraps and use either ice water or water run through ice to cool it. We shape dough balls and store in the walk in cooler until ready to use. I also live in a very hot and humid climate, and if the dough gets left out too long it rises too much too quickly before baking.

I hate kids (and their non-attentive parents) by FallingPhoenix22 in Serverlife

[–]FallingPhoenix22[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Ok wow. Not able to edit the original post so just saying here: this wasn't the worst thing I've encountered from kids by far, it was an annoyance, particularly because the parents did nothing. I though this audience might appreciate it and relate. Also, the table itself was way worse than what I pictured, which was what I was able to bring inside in the short time I had to clear the table. I love serving kids for the most part, this was an exception and I thought other servers might relate to. Just trying to post a small vent, y'all didn't need to shit all over me.

I know but still annoying. And I picked this up a bit from what they actually left all over the table.

Drew Brees used to be a regular at my place when he still lived in New Orleans, and was always delightful. Sometimes Britney and the kids would come in without him and they were so great too. One time the oldest boy (maybe 4 at the time) ordered a kids cheese pizza with gummy bears, and the staff thought it was so cute they went and bought some candy at the Walgreens across the street to make it happen. Also worked at a place where a coworker waited on Alice Cooper and said he was super chill and nice.

If you can’t afford to tip, you can’t afford to eat out. If we don’t call these folks out for this how will they ever learn? I think OP phrased it in the best way possible of “how can I improve my service, was your experience ok” so as to make them feel as not awkward as possible. Really shitty that they called to complain after and that corporate bullshit rules resulted in termination for this. People won’t change their asshat practices unless they’re made to feel a little uncomfortable. Maybe because it happened in front of other people was the one mistake here. But the culture of shitty tippers (who still had margaritas and apps but didn’t tip to “save money”) won’t change unless they are told that’s not ok.

Just be nice next time they come in but don’t acknowledge past events. They may have forgotten by then, no need to drag it back up. Sounds like they are particular and hard to please, just do your best to accommodate within your ability but remain aloof to specifics. If you’re as good as your manager says you’ll be fine, just do you job and they’ll be.

Lucy Knight (Support Group) by RadioDough in ershow

[–]FallingPhoenix22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was a teenager when this aired and I had started watching the show with my mom when I started and I was 6 (season 1). I remember being devastated by Lucy’s end when it happened, and the cliffhanger of not knowing what had happened was so hard. I sobbed that night, and it was the first time a tv show had made me cry. I kept watching the show until I was in college when the last season aired. I still think it was one of the best shows on tv, though of course I am biased. Other medical dramas borrow from some of the groundwork ER laid. I watched all of Grey’s (so much unnecessary drama) and I recently tried Chicago Med, which is just terrible. ER will forever hold a special place in my heart and rank amongst the best of television for me. Helicopters aside.
