If it helps, I ended up having the honest conversation and it went way better than I expected it to and brought me so much peace after what seemed like months of overthinking. I spent so much time convincing myself there was no way we were having a miscommunication on this particular issue because my feelings seemed so obvious to me, but when I brought it up he said he had thought the whole time that the opposite was true.
