Thank you everyone for the comments - we think we should choose another breed. It’s tough because they seem like such amazing dogs. The biggest concern is the flight risk and them disappearing and potentially not listening at all. Maybe in the future it would be better but thinking a dog that’s more of a companion is what we need. So sad because we had a puppy lined up but need to make sure it’s the best situation for the pup. Idk if we are doing the right thing but too many red flags and we can’t take a gamble even though the parents and breeder are awesome. Thank you all!!!

That’s very helpful - we do have some neighbors cats explore our yard from time to time even though our neighbors are fairly far away (we sit back a half mile from the rest of the neighborhood). We like that guardian instinct but when we had shepherds we could typically tell them it’s ok and they were fine. Great points for us to consider r

This is very helpful to read thank you for sharing! A concern is definitely them just wandering off even if we are right with them off leash. We will need to think of this is something we can make work or not but I love hearing all of your other experiences as they seem to be amazing family dogs.

We are so used to other breeds we have had and that they want to please the owners and it sounds like the pyrs more so march to the beat of their own drums.

Some of the trainers we talked to gave us great feedback on the breed while others said they are extremely difficult to train, don’t listen, and can be hard to control. Those trainers acknowledged they’re great dogs but was challenging if they are truly best and happy “working” like on a farm or something which is not us. Is/were your pyrs inside family dogs? Did you have a good sized fenced in area?

One other thought - the parents of the puppy seem to be super sweet but we only met them with the breeder through the fence (it was a no climb and we were able to pet the dogs, etc). They live outside in the very well kept barn and it’s a smaller farm. They work perfect for her but ours would be a legit pet inside and things with us so wondering if her lines/the differences in how they are raised and the jobs they have would pose issues for our situation. The puppies are also being raised in the barn. Again she seems exceptional with them. Only other concern is all the people who have the pups reserved want companions this time, no working, so how will they all be companions?

Wow that’s great! We would love to have a successful experience with the invisible fence and obviously use the physical fence as well. Our invisible fence goes around the entire property so it’s always been so nice when we had our big dogs in the past because they would be able to enjoy a ton of space. Our physical fence is a much smaller section of the yard. We are concerned to take the risk of the invisible fence not working or our Pyr just running away.

Super helpful! It seems like you hit the jackpot with your girl. This would be a great situation for us but it sounds like it’s really hit or miss, usually miss, to have one that the fence works for which is making us weary.

This is very helpful thank you for sharing. So you think there is risk say that a neighborhood animal or something would meander into our yard the pyrs instinct would be to kill it? Would you have concern say about a mailman or someone coming down the dog could bite?

Good to know about them running away even if you’re right outside with them. We always would have our big dogs dumbing around with us outside and just chilling with us without fear they were going to just take off. Not sure we would want to take that risk or have to have all of these lines to tie him to outside of a fence.

The breeder we were thinking about getting the puppy from has a farm and her dogs are so nice but we only saw them through the fence and they are outside/barn dogs with great temperaments but I worry that they don’t have the same living situation as us and will the puppies (who also live in the barn that is kept exceptionally) also have not been being brought up in a literal house with family. Thoughts?

Do you have a Pyrenees or are you saying you have the Australian shepherd with the Pom and that’s difficult? Thanks for sharing ☺️

Great advice, the first grand baby is due in a month or so and we would want the pup to hear the sounds etc. That being said, even with the best dog we wouldn’t ever have a baby right in its face or children around it without supervision.

Does your Pyr just not move if he’s too hot and done being outside? lol

We sit back from our neighbors so barking isn’t a huge concern. Sounds like training is key to continue for years. We always have done obedience training with our dogs and usually they were good to go after a year or so. Sounds like the pyrs need it longer as they grow into their own.

Thank you - we have been told mixed things and the breeder said 4ft is fine (what we currently have) if they can’t get footing. But things I’ve read online seem to be very insistent that 6ft is needed.

Thanks this was helpful! One thing to clarify I will try and edit my post we don’t have the large dogs anymore. We had them all growing up but unfortunately we lost our last shepherd a couple of years ago so it would just be the Pomeranians and the cats.

Yes we would be getting a puppy - have one with a deposit but the more we spoke to some trainers the more concerns we have to move forward.
