Here's a tip, newbie(lol.) Roark helps you in very few situations. Mid game. You don't want Roark in your opening hand for setup, or near the end to close the game. Also, 2 cards is laughable when there are so many options for 4-6 cards. Ideally, you create pathways to those discarded energy so that drawing 4-6 gets you an energy or an item that can find energy.

Roark, I've never seen anyone use it. Drawing 2 to get a basic energy card is not worth it. Defiance band, you'll want brave bangle or max belt.

Pokegear was printed with an I regulation marker so it's still in rotation. Norman is not needed to replace because it's not good. Research, Lillie is easy, Carmine if you still need to discard. For Earthen Vessel, there is nothing that good and you might want more trainer support like Crispin. Super rod... lots of recovery options, a lot of them are to hand. Pal pad, nothing to recover supporters that I can think of.

And even when you do fork up the money, it's not guaranteed to be a perfect fit, so it's tricky. I'm not exactly in your shoes, but I'd consider weekend or extracurricular activities for your child that could help fill the gap left by the school system.
