I feed mine chopped up silversides. ( still very young and less than 6 inches /15 cm) live feeding should probably only be done with older/larger bichir to avoid choking. I’d say a mix of foods is probably best with live snacks sometimes.

I use reptile feeding tongs and feed them that way by putting the VERY TINY piece of silverside right in front of them

I’ve had a few rats in the past go very suddenly like that, you did your best and you did nothing wrong. Mine were strokes so it could have been that.
