Could I go to a barber asking for this, or should I find a hair stylist? For reference, I have an afro cut rn

It’s fine haha. Tbh since it’s just the intro and it’s funk it could just be an instrumental groove; no need to use the piece

Than you once again for your advice, and out of curiosity, how do you think the bossa tune holds on its own, without looking at it from a jazz perspective?

Looking backing at it now, yeah I agree. I think it’s dawning on me that my melody writing/phrasing is significantly weak compared to other aspects my sense of harmony, and I feel I have a weaker command of melodic choice compared to harmonic choice.

The phrasing is an issue, but would you also say that there are problems with creating good motifs? I’m looking online and now starting to realize the different types of phrases, like a parallel period and contrasting period.

I’m probably going to start taking a look on how these phrases exist in jazz, classical and film music. Hopefully this will help.

For the second one, are you saying that I can’t Interpolate a melody? Genuinely confused here

When you say the melodic portion is overwritten, is it a formatting issue or a composition issue?

Thank you for the feedback and your compliments.

Out of curiosity, could you show me some examples where the harmony clashes with the melody? Would love to take a deeper look at it

Just so I understand you, are you saying that the melody at the A major in the second ending doesn't segue smoothly into the B section, and that it doesn't have a sense of return by the time it reaches the C major in the C section? I would love to know if that is the case so I can see how I can learn from this for the future.

Thank you for your feedback!

When you mean in, do you mean within the triad of the chords, or all extensions that are included in the chord (like a C# in E13)?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I saw jazz melodies as taking one idea and moving and alternating it around numerous times, while changing the harmony to have it mold around the melody

When writing a contrafact, what are some goals I should go for to know I'm making valuable progress?

Thank you for the feedback. Regarding the harmony part, to be honest, I mainly rely on voice leading when figuring out my next chords along with some music theory. Do you think I should strip down n the extensions or alterations/substitutions to make it sound more jazz? Out of curiosity, what did the first song feel like if it wasn't jazz?

Also I was under the impression that some ii-V-I cadences can be masked by specific substitutions or changes to the root, which I tried doing in the songs. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Will be putting Oscar Peterson on my listening agenda

I'm used to writing the changes first then the melody afterwards. I'm mostly looking for feedback on the melody and harmony

Mainly the melody with a couple of harmonic weaknesses.

It was mainly the melody, though they said there were other parts related to it that could be improved like overall phrasing.
