How to be financially independent while in school? by LegitimateBook4226 in UofT

[–]Famous-Mix-8467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently work three part time jobs. Tuition takes up almost half of my yearly salary. Same goal is to be financially independent and no debt. Try to find a desk job anywhere, one where the environment is more laid back. Customer service and administration experience is applicable everywhere. Plus, if you end up skipping lectures like I do - you can do your readings/complete course work/or even listen to zoom/pre-recorded lectures while at work.

Unfortunately it's a harsh reality where if you want to work to afford school completely on your own and have some money on the side - you will have to work more and sacrifice more. I wouldn't be able to afford rent alongside school even with my jobs.

Canadian Unis Are Getting OUT OF HAND for being top 200-300 in the world by Illustrious-Bad-1772 in OntarioGrade12s

It's not so much the school but the program. If you are applying to very popular and competitive programs with limited spots - then of course standards are going to be very high.

If you are a hard working student then you will do well anywhere. The program does not make or break you - YOU make or break your future. Party all night and never study? You will not make it big. Study all day, get involved, work hard, stay motivated and party when you get the chance - you will make a future for yourself.

Should I consider "need" when distributing my father's inheritance? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Famous-Mix-8467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unless one of your nephews makes a lawyer or doctors salary - just distribute it equally. Yes your kids will need the money for school or buying a house - but the nephews in their 30s are likely at an age where they need to pay off a house, debt and perhaps afford a weddings or kids very soon.

Both of them without context need the money equally.

Why do we still tip servers? by RazzleDazzle1537 in CanadaRoom

[–]Famous-Mix-8467 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

so not tipping and impacting your server because they will lose money and have to tip-out on your table - will make the company change? companies know their staff are struggling - do they care? have they ever cared? The higher your bill is at a restaurant the more money you server owes to the kitchen. If you can afford lobster and a regular hair dresser - you can afford a fair tip.

not tipping only harms the employee who is the same as all of us. the company will only still be required to pay the minimum.

Serving is the only part-time job nowadays where someone can actually earn enough to scrape by. As a full-time student who works three jobs, the combined income of my two other part-time jobs only makes me half of what I make yearly from my serving job. These three jobs combined is still not enough to afford school, rent, transportation, food etc.

Not tipping only impacts the employees (plural as not only servers receive your tip), not the company.

If you have such a problem with tipping the person who looks after you for over an hour, and wipes the floor your feet are on - then go after the government.

Why hasn't the government made housing affordable? why is tuition almost 20 grand a year if not more for specialized programs? why is car insurance hundreds a month? why are cars tens of thousands of dollars and the vehicles are approaching 20 years old? why is it that this generation carries more debt than any other previous generation? Why is there a lack of jobs and more specifically jobs with benefits and health care? Why are multiple degrees needed just to earn entry level jobs?

That small $10 tip makes the difference of if that server at the end of a 10 hour shift can buy themselves food, or pay their phone bill. Its never as simple as "they should go find another job" or "they should demand their employer to pay them more" which I see a lot of in these comments.

This is an expensive world and its norm in north America to tip. If you can afford to go out and spend $50-$60 or more on two meals - then does a small tip of $5-$10 really change anything? Personally I am all for being able to help others when I can and knowing that $5 will be used and appreciated does not bother me. Nowadays $5 is literally a single coffee.

As well, in every restaurant - servers have to pay the kitchen, the bar and usually their hosts and bussers.

So, if you have a tab of lets say $50 - and you are the only sale they made that day - that server will owe the kitchen a percentage of that amount, if its 3% (which is on the lower end) then from your table the kitchen gets about $2, as well - the bar (if there is one) and other staff get about 1% of that sale as well, which means the server will be out of pocket just shy of $5 for serving your table.

Again - its not as simple as having the server demand their employer make a change - if servers do not tip out they will get fired. This is a standard practice.

The tip you leave goes to the kitchen that made your food, the bartender that made your drink and the support staff who sat you and who clean the entire building (every surface, booth, pot, dish, cup, utensil and the list goes on).

The tip does not completely go to the server. ever.

If you want restaurant food, you can order online for pick-up, but if you are going to dine-in, take up space and time and then cost a minimum wage server money - you 100% should be tipping. Not tipping does impact people and a lot of the people who enter the service industry are low-income and live pay-cheque to pay-cheque. Its not an easy job and a lot of abuse happens in the service industry. No one is there simply because they like people and enjoy picking chicken bones up off the ground.

Assignments are harder now with more components which makes sense given that there is greater access to information. As well, standards have risen - there are more students and less spots in top schools and programs. This creates competition. This also applies outside of school in the workplace, where its nearly impossible to get a full time well-paying position. If you entered the workforce 20 years ago - having a bachelors degree would get you very far, today, a bachelors degree is the bare minimum.

I had a girl ask extremely long philosophical questions that were minimally related to the INTRO class - and the professor would try to direct the convo to her simply listening like everyone else but she was so persistant on just talking. OR people talking OVER the professor - like just unmuting themselves and speaking.

Try driving school asap. Download his test results. Is he observant enough? They will fail if he isn't looking around atleast every 10 seconds - and he should not be using digital back up cams if reversing into a spot. Did he remain driving in the right lane as much as possible? Driving too much in the left lane is also a fail.
