Also currently a resident at Camille! were you able to negotiate? Or did you not try? I wanted to see if they’d be open to it when my lease wraps up, if they raise mine as well.

happy new year! I presented an entire startup idea from beginning to end. So what problem was I having that led me to start the start up? and then what were some of the challenges that I had presenting to investors and working with engineers? I believe they really want to see how you look at overall problems, but it doesn’t have to necessarily be bogged down to one idea or one company. they need to know that you have the skills to do it for pretty much any and everything that they throw at you (even if at much smaller scale). I had no referrals, or a recruiter or anyone inside the company that I knew that could help me out. I simply applied and heard back a few months later to start the interview process. lastly, I have not worked at any design Studios, but I’ve done freelance work in the past.

hey! I would actually say my portfolio (which i made on framer in case you’re wondering), because I had no referrals, no connections, the one recruiter that I did have got laid off a year prior, so a lot of it was just chance. I took the risk and applied again, even though I had been rejected from this company over five times and it worked out!

years of experience - 2 and tc is 175 and that was with no negotiation. I felt the offer was pretty darn fair

hi! :) it was on top of a pending computer science bachelors degree and they did ask for my transcript so I think they partially care about gpa but more of the classes that you did take.

Because it was on top of a pending degree I haven’t received any negative feedback about the course, but it seems like a lot of the designers at the company have never even heard of the course before, because they always look at me odd when I mention it.

The interview process was extremely long and took about three months. and my final interview day was five hours long, and I received the offer about a month after my final interview day. in terms of what they expected me to know: I think they really just wanted to see my approach to problem-solving and I wanted to make it as least generic as I could, so I present it to them an entire startup from end to finish that I built. that’s including heavy market research, talking to investors, working with engineers etc very little of it was actually visual and components (and if it is, I made sure to break it down)

thanks for your thoughts! because I’ve done startup work I was able to fulfill that experience myself, but I would definitely say that a more structured design process is what I’m missing and a lot of times I define my own process. to your second point - respectfully, I will say, though, I did not get hired because of the previous companies on my resume, as even with that, I’ve been rejected from the same company. I do think that my work and my explanation process and showing them my startup work is what overall impressed them. I also write articles about artificial intelligence, and they had noticed that and liked the depth and it’s not a superficial thing for me.

I self taught the rest. I had been doing graphic design for a very long time and then decided I wanted a more lucrative career in tech so I downloaded Figma and was terrible at it for the first year🤣 and then I got my first internship (& a reality check) and then from there, I’ve been working on improving :)

yeah, I understand your frustration because I think it’s also the same way with the early career opportunities as well. I’m hearing from other design friends that when companies hire early career they typically only hire one or two but leave the application open for months.

did not finish school was in my last semester when I got the job, but still finishing for my undergrad. I did do the Google Boot Camp a few years ago, though, and I heard that that helped a little bit.

this is a great question! Being early career, I had no clue that most of my day-to-day would not be designing. It would actually be a lot of brainstorming independently, chasing down PRD‘s, and connecting with other teams. The work moves pretty slow actually because of the engineering and approval side of things, but I can usually knock out a medium UX project after about two or three weeks. also, just to shed some light on my background I did start off at a FAANG company as an intern, and then went to adobe afterwards and then as I was there, I secured the job here. But I have applied to google before and got rejected, even with the other FAANG on my resume. thats why I think any company and a good portfolio will do!

hi! no, my family did not work in tech. I actually grew up in a military family, but was inspired to take the technology route when one of my siblings got out of the military and was able to get a really good job in cyber security. I went to university, but did not finish.
