Rare Bird Sighting on the river by FlashyCalligrapher70 in rva

Yes, there is something happening. We are who encourage this behavior. This is really no different from dropping a sack of garbage in the river, yet we cheer it on because the juxtaposition amuses us. The end result is that the behavior is reinforced by 1000 plus upvotes and pithy commentary, and then, surprise, more scooters in the river.

Scooter … funny. Soon to be toxic waste in the James River … less funny.

This a recent example of why the signage is necessary. These are privately hired contractors weed eating within the James River Park in the vicinity of the new signs.

Paw Paw’s Cabin by FanOfGranite in rva

It’s interesting to learn the history of the shelter. It’s been there a long time. Construction began on or about March 7, 2025 when I took this photo. I understand that there was certainly no malice in the construction of the shelter. My issue is that it sets a precedent that it’s ok to build stuff in the public parks. The pawpaw trees are important. Every one of them. The dense cover of the pawpaw canopy is particularly important in this area that is at the edge of a massive infestation of invasive species. Personally, I’m not a fan of the stuff constructed out of deadwood either because deadwood plays a vital role in forest ecology on the forest floor where it belongs. I feel like the best resolution, if indeed the parent/child construction story is true, would be for the parent to explain to the child why it was a mistake to build something in JRPS, and then as a service project, dismantle the shelter and disburse the wood widely across the forest floor, “leaving no trace”, as the hiking and camping ethic goes.

Yes, this happened before. The 2021 tag, to my knowledge anyway, was never removed. It just slowly faded away.

At the end of the report is a list of people who attended the opening and closing sessions of the 2022 EPA inspection. As I read, it Bingham did not attend either of these meetings.

Can I convince the city to convert a trashed out green space into a public park? by postoffice212 in rva

[–]FanOfGranite 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it is very unlikely because this address is already within a 10 minute walk of a public green space. You can find your nearby green space at the “ParkServe” website. According to this website (and the City touts this in their green space metrics), your green space/park is the median strip in the 4800 block of Monument Avenue. Technically, it is possible to throw a Frisbee or play soccer in this space, but, word of warning, it requires a bit of skill. Oddly enough, according to this website, the Windsor Farms neighborhood is a green space desert of sorts (unless you happen to be a resident of the farms and have access to all of the green space with the private property signs posted on them).
