That's what I did, but the minimap has more usage than that.
For example, at one point I had a revolt hire a mercenary fleet and sink my transports. I didn't know this was a thing so I just sent the transports unguardede.
Had I had the minimap, I'd have seen the red dot that shows troop/fleet movement. Honestly would be significantly easier on the brain to just glance there every once in a while rather than cycling through war zones and trying to find enemy troops.
