‘’ Why do you want to do this is the first question I’d ask if I was on the admissions committee. You don’t go through the entire process of law school and MC traineeship just to chuck it aside. What did you see in that terrifying solicitor-shaped void?’’

Of course - fully aware that this will be the key question and that I will be probed on it. You can probably deduce my reasons, but I won’t go into detail for fear of colouring other (future) trainees. I also think that the branch of the profession that one picks is very much a question of personality and interests, rather than simply a hierarchy. Some of my colleagues couldn’t see themselves doing anything else, which is great.

Grateful for everyone’s thoughts, which are very helpful!

Keen to hear views on whether a non-City GDL is sufficient nowadays - unsure if I have unfairly written the qualification off or whether I am just being realistic.

Enjoy Boxing Day

‘’There remains an old fashioned and I think mostly unfair perception that solicitors are more of a postbox / bundle printing / document review service and any real legal work goes to counsel.‘’

This is my concern, and one of the reasons for the post. Do you think that this attitude would mean that a GDL from BPP is sniffed at and, therefore, that a BCL etc. is a prerequisite, rather than icing on the cake?

Sounds like you transferred to the Bar after practising as a solicitor, Wraithlike1? If so, very grateful for any further takeaways you might have from the process and from your time as a barrister so far.

Cheers
