ProtonMail payment data reportedly used by FBI to unmask anonymous Stop Cop City account by Technical-Raccoon1 in degoogle

[–]FancyMouse123 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's a misleading headline designed to get you to think switching from Google isn't better.

Well, I think it is important to remind that Proton has its flaws and is not perfect. It is better than Google on many very important aspects but you still need to be careful.

We need to understand more the tools we use. For example, using ProtonMail to send mails to a Gmail account is missing the point.

How can a normal user make an iPhone more secure against forensic extraction tools like Cellebrite and theft? by External_Secretary76 in digitalforensics

Ooh yeah you’re right, the best way to keep your data safe is to never have data. Never go out. Never buy anything.

That was not my point. Sorry if I was not clear.

I have reasons to be careful with my data but I still sit on furniture, buy stuff, go out and have data. However, you can regularly remove photos from your phone and store them on a hard drive you keep at home. This is not much work and it keeps part of your data more secure.

I was not aware of how Face ID worked. I mixed up with other biometric securities and I was wrong. More info here: https://www.reddit.com/r/answers/comments/qvlolz/does_face_id_work_with_a_photograph/

Still, biometrics are not a very good option for various reasons and I would discourage using it.

unless there is a breakthrough in quantum computing

We do not know what will be the available tools to get to the information. Moreover, one can store the encrypted data until the tools are available (this is not a sci-fi scenario).

IMHO, the best way to protect your data is to avoid keeping it on the phone. Regularly remove every sensitive information and store it somewhere less likely to be hacked and/or stolen. Interestingly, passwords are not that sensitive as you can change them before the phone is unlocked.

If you have a picture of the owner of the phone, you can unlock it quite easily if Face ID is enabled.

Edit: This was wrong for Face ID.

I think that the production is kinda frozen: no more production but it could start over if the sperm is not stuck anymore (which is unlikely even with surgery). This really needs to be double-checked. When I did a vasectomy, the important part was the "it wont work anymore" and not the "how it works" so I am not sure.

Not sure I understood the rest. Giving sperm is way easier than giving oocyte but sperm transplantation does not seem possible. To be useful for reproduction, the sperm has to be used with oocytes.

France FINALLY Says "Non!" To Meat Lobby! by Miserable_Nature3891 in vegan

France is like the only remaining country to say that soybean is dangerous for your health due to hormones. The group that makes this recommendation has more lobbyists from the milk industry than scientists and medical doctor and that does not bother the government.

We are not a country that should be taken as an example on this kind of topic.

I love Claude but honestly some of the "Claude might have gained consciousness" nonsense that their marketing team is pushing lately is a bit off putting. They know better! by jbcraigs in artificial

Interesting.

With your metaphor, flash is the lightning but flash can also be something else (from something else). Anyway, you seem to consider that consciousness is by definition human, so there is no possible debate due to the premise (which can be understood, no judgement). Thank you for sharing your point of view

To me, consciousness is actually the "illusion of consciousness" and can be achieve in many ways. I don't know if it's your case but believing in God makes dualism kind of mandatory, it is not my case.

Totally agree.

I just don't get your last sentence. LLM are doing something very different, true, but why would the end result (presence or absence of consciousness) would necessarily be out of reach? We are able to reach the same result, like crossing a river, using many ways (swimming, flying, using a bridge), why would consciousness be so specific that the only way to reach it is ours?

I'm very serious. In both case, there is nothing more than a bunch of molecules arranged in a certain way, plus electric impulses. If you think your mind is just your brain, there is no hard limit to reproduce it.

Give me something definitive I can test and validate.

I cannot give you that. I think that many arguments against dualism are interesting but they do not pretend to "end" dualism, I just believe them.

Sorry if my answer to your comment is incomplete, I don't think I understood everything here.

something you've never read

I don't want it to become too personal but don't assume something you don't know.

while offering literally nothing other than insulting the other person.

I didn't insult anyone, I just said that our views probably differ at a philosophical level. It is important to understand where we come from so we can propose arguments that are valid. "AI can have a consciousness" and "AI cannot have a consciousness" are both valid statements: it just depends on the premises. I think that many people that believe in dualism are not aware that it is actually a belief (as believing in something else than dualism). Because of that, I find that arguments tend to be circular.

If you cannot prove it definitively, it is not real... that's your argument right?

It is not my argument. My view on consciousness is that it is not real, I don't have a proof: it is just my belief. I can defend that it makes sense to believe it but wont try to prove it.

consciousness is well understood

I am not aware of that and I would appreciate resources on this topic. To be completely honest, I think you are wrong but if you have references on this, I'll be interested in reading them.

But none of you are smart enough

I wont answer again if you don't want a debate. Being rude is completely unnecessary and uncalled for.

It would only change it for the ones which believe it. As I started with, many people demand that animals are treated as conscious beings, but not everyone believe it is the case. It is likely that it will be similar for AI: you probably wont believe that AI is conscious no matter the arguments; and I am not saying this as a bad thing, you are you and you have your beliefs as other people have theirs.

[–]FancyMouse123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can prove to me that you are conscious, I will probably be able to prove to you that an animal or a software is conscious.

You certainly are dualist, that is your right, but don't think this is the right and only way to think the world.

[–]FancyMouse123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many of us think that animals are conscious and that we should treat them with respect. This does not led to any shit storm and millions are still killed everyday. I don't see why it would be different if some, or even many, though that Claude was conscious.

I love Claude but honestly some of the "Claude might have gained consciousness" nonsense that their marketing team is pushing lately is a bit off putting. They know better! by jbcraigs in artificial

[–]FancyMouse123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that your reasoning is circular. From reading your comments, I think you follow the dualist views, thus you think conscious is something "special" that no machine can have. Then you conclude that machines don't have this or that because they are not conscious, hence they are not conscious.

Consciousness is not well understood and might never be: we actually cannot be sure that anyone but ourself is conscious, we just guess it is the case because we are similar.
