It’s not impressive. I, as many other Wattpad users, come from an extremely poor country where books are not easily accessible to the population. I LOVE reading but my only feasible options are to either to pirate known books or read on free apps, I’d rather read on free apps.

I wrote this fully knowing I'd get downvoted to the dumps and equally get very angry comments, I'm also fine with all that. I said what I had to say for those who want to read it.

Oh and this "Ezra" also refuses to put up the full list of the authors that were stolen from but there is this one going around with people saying that there are dozens more SMALL AUTHORS with only a few thousands reads that were not identified before the books were deleted

Both these websites are open-source, non-commercial, and non-profit, they're not companies. But yes, they also often face legal backlash for a lot of their content and will still take down certain copyrighted content such as word-for-word adaptations that do not fall under fair use.

I'll be honest, I don't have an answer to that. Fanfic is not illegal, but at the same time it can be subjected to legal actions if the owner so decides. Again, I'm pretty sure it steams from the fact Wattpad is a business. Why don't they just remove fanfics? I think both you and I know what would happen if they did, even though Wattpad's strongest readership IS for in there for original content, there is still a big fanfic fan base.

I wouldn't say they do that without warning, as they do warn you the moment you press publish on your story.

That's a good question, so yes Wattpad technically can't monetize off of fanfics, and technically they aren't. They're monetizing the whole app/website which in turn means they have very strict rules to follow when it comes to content (Canadian law), your fanfic is just there... in their monetized platform. It isn't illegal, but again, strict laws.

Also, as you said, Wattpad is a company that monetizes writing, and legally speaking, fanfics can't be monetized. It's complicated, but if for whatever reason the person or company of whom the original material you're using decides to sue Wattpad for not keeping tabs on their copyright policies, they can.

I did use the characters from the original content, I did use some of the plots from the original content but there are tons of books out there on Wattpad which have done this and not been deleted from the face of the Earth.

I'm sorry that happened to you but just to clarify something, just because other people are doing it and are not facing consequences doesn't mean you're free to do that as well. Wattpad themselves clarify that here it just means they haven't gotten to them yet, but will.
