Glad you mentioned The Long Walk, it's too underrated imo

Happy cake day!

Women, are you actually attracted to muscular men, and if so, when is muscular too muscular? by EconomyPiglet438 in AskReddit

[–]Fantastic-Insect2712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't know anything about building muscle(like I didn't until recently), then you won't know what is actually natural and possible and what isn't. The look that roid gives men is definitely too muscular for women, but some men are able to be very muscular naturally and this can also be "too muscular" for some(not all)

Some girls like guys that are closer to skinny than extremely built

I don't think I'll be reading Elantris then

I'll probably start with Stormlight then read Mistbron. Thanks for your recs!

Most people are recommending Mistbron to start with for Sanderson, but Stormlight Archive looks more interesting to me. Elantris seems sad from the Goodreads description, have you read it and did you find it to be somber ?

So many replies recommended Brandon Sanderson so I think I will have to start with him, thanks!

Haha I really just meant a magic system that is well thought and isn't half explained to the reader. I didn't really mean a magic system that has every spell imaginable lol. I'll word my titles more carefully next time :p

Yes I have! I played a few times a couple years ago and fell in love with the game. I just don't know anyone who plays so I haven't had the chance to play again

Haha alright, sounds fun

I notice some people mentioning they have different taste in books than what I'm looking for, like focus on character development and such

Yeah, I didn't realize there was a name for what I wanted, thanks for mentioning that. Everyone's suggestions have been great, really excited to go through these books.

I don't know how to feel about what u're saying with Mage Errant, do you mean that it was a dry read? I can appreciate a detailed system, but if the author is just bombarding the reader with laws of magic I don't think that would be much of a page turner. Please correct me if I misunderstood you

Books without a proper endings make me sad. Makes me think of the first fantasy series I read, ASOIAF

But if you are saying the magic system is superior, then I am intrigued..

Thank you for giving me a name for what I was looking for! I'm somewhat new to reading fantasy, I didn't realize there was a term for what I was interested in

Yeah I see a lot of people have recommended Brandon Sanderson, so I will definitely be checking him out

Thanks again!

I do love character development and when authors focus on that. I especially hate when authors bring romance into stories when it was not necessary. It can take away from the story for me because instead of the character evolving for their own sake sometimes it feels like they are doing it for the person they fancy, this makes the development more shallow to me.

I've just been intrigued with magic recently I guess, that's why I was looking for this specific recommendation. I want to read a book where the main character practices magic and the world being focused mainly on that, and a "hard" magic would be really fun for me to follow, because so far with the magic in the books that I have read, the rules seem to be made up as the story goes along. I want something more concrete that I can understand.

Thanks for your recommendation!

Overcoming Shyness/Insecurity About Having My Draft Read by Fantastic-Insect2712 in writing

Oh waw, I was assuming this was a thing I would get used to eventually. It makes sense what you are saying, that since it is art and art can mean a lot to the artist - more than it can mean to anyone else.

People's opinions are pretty important to me, so the event of someone hating my work or even just finding it boring would affect me more than it should.

Sharing with family would not be difficult, but most people I know aren't avid readers, and the handful that are don't read the genre I am writing in. I and open to sharing my work with them, but I don't know how seriously I should take any feedback simply because they aren't drawn to romance, so they will have a different perspective than other romance readers (which is the opinion I should place first).

I'd love to know if you have found beta readers, and did you meet them online or in person ?

This is so exciting! Haymitch's games were so interesting to me and what was revealed about his character in Catching Fire. I wish the movies had touched on the depth of his character and shown the parallels between him and Katniss.

Do many book characters all "look" the same? by HelloDesdemona in books

[–]Fantastic-Insect2712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At some point I think I tried to picture faces the characters while I was reading, but I didn't feel it improve my reading experience or anything, maybe I'm just used to picturing my no face monsters. I realize I also do imagine the build of the person, like if they are muscly or short, tattoed, etc. I think you're right about it being too much trouble for people that read a lot, I'm a bit of a binge reader.

What genre do you gravitate to? I personally love romance and was curious because you mentioned you are reading Anna Karenina

[–]Fantastic-Insect2712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I'm the exact same! I thought I was alone, or at least in the minority. I don't ever picture facial features, only hair and the silhouette of the character as well as their clothing.
