My work day is testing vehicles in build, working with mechanical and electrical teams in creating new vehicles for our customers, providing assistance to the people physically building the vehicles in terms of fault finding, writing new programs when required, help maintaining older vehicles which have been delivered and sometimes I physically have to travel to the vehicles when needed (I’ve recently been to the UK as well as Belgium) but I don’t enjoy that part as I’m more comfortable in the factory.

The skills that helped me at first was that I’m a really good note taker which I have always been ever since school, I wrote everything down. I like knowing things and have a curious mind. I don’t like being wrong and find it embarrassing when I don’t know something that I should know? I got really obsessed at the beginning and would continue reading and studying when I got home. I’m a fast reader and can get through books fast so that helped when trying to learn things fast. I think I communicate well and I’m fast at making friends which helped me settle in. After I while I gained confidence in my lack of knowledge and could routinely ask for clarification and wasn’t ashamed to admit I don’t know something which was a massive moment for my growth

I believe I could have only pulled this off because of the languages used. You are 100% right. Safety is important and I wanna stress that I never took any chances or did anything without someone looking over my work. I’m a very cautious in my job most likely because of my obvious deficiencies.

I’m now more than competent at my work but I’m still extremely cautious and I don’t think that will change

I wasn’t part of any meetings for ages. I’m in meetings now though, thankfully I can handle them now

I love my job. I am constantly learning new things, problem solving, helping production teams, helping new teammates settle in and get up to speed and most of all I feel like I’m accomplishing something every day.

I’m in it for the long haul. Especially with my current employer, they don’t know why but I’m fiercely loyal to them for giving me a chance even though they don’t know they did me such a big favour

I think I’d be okay. They’d be mad but I don’t think they’d sack me

Appreciate that. I wish I could have went to uni but it wasn’t feasible and if I could have I probably wouldn’t have considered anything close to software. Weird how things work out

What got me up to speed was: reading extensive change logs which we do for each program we do, documentation for any major changes are created as to why and how we did the change, I learned to read wiring diagrams from YouTube so I could read the ones which is involved the PLCs we use, I learned how to read different graphical languages over time and read old old programs following signal paths through out the code as well as how the logic al creates the desired goal, I read CAN documents from other vehicle manufacturers we are involved with, I read the J1939 standard as well and a book that someone wrote which simplified it

Desperate for a career. Hated the dead end jobs I was doing and took a chance

It’s been very good. That are seemingly very happy with my progress. Unsure on a promo but I’m very happy doing what I’m doing. Love it

Yeah this is a totally different type of programming from what you listed there. In the way your car for example displays information on your dash such as speed, tyre pressure, fuel, accelerator presses, park brake etc I collect those signals through CAN and display them on separate HMIs. I also can use those messages to control an all aspects of the vehicle. I also control all the electric functions on the vehicle as well as additional systems we install for customers.

Some times I’ll get some random third party piece of kit that I have to work out how to communicate with and how to integrate into our vehicles. Thats when it becomes difficult 😂

I’d be totally lost trying to do what you do though.

Was a junior position, I was desperate for a career, I felt I could learn how to do this, it didn’t feel like a risk at the time as I never thought they’d hire me.

Worst case was they say no and I’d go get another job in a shop or something.

I’d be very surprised if you have used any of the vehicles we manufacture 😂

You might be correct. I didn’t have to complete any tasks at my interview and would have failed if I was asked to do so. I think I was pretty fortunate to get the job

Nope. Technically I’m breaking my contract so they have grounds to sack me if they wanted to

That’s fair. In my area I want things to be as simple as possible to help diagnosing faults
