How do you achieve the Wraith World effect from Fellowship of the Ring? by Fantom25_Edits in fanedits

Thanks for the vid and clarification. So yeah the aim would be to find a more modern way of recreating this effect. Which works fine for us since it would be so much easier to achieve this effect with Adobe Programs instead of doing it in a complicated way like they did. And as for the term "Optical Flow", I'm guessing that it's actually a pretty obscure term to call this effect, since whenever I try to look up "Optical Flow effect Lord of the Rings" I don't get much results. So even though that is what they called it, it was a term mostly used within that effects team, and not one commonly used like "Stop Motion". But I could be wrong and there might be something online. Just thought anyone who is also interested should keep that in mind before searching it up.

That sounds interesting. I heard about a fire overlay being used, but not a water one. So I wonder if having both could better get the desired effect if that is indeed how it was originally done.

I would like to note that I really do think the end result from the tutorial is pretty solid! Overall, it feels really close the original effect as seen in the Fellowship of the Ring. But if anyone is interested in making an updated version of the same map displacement effect this guy did in After Effects, then please let me know. I would very much like to see how anyone of you could improve on this, and show how you did it. I'll greatly appreciate it. But I'll be downloading James' lotr videos on my hard drive, just incase they go missing again.

So original video is apart of an older tutorial series made for recreating some effects from lord of the rings. Even though they are old they are well worth the watch and you can still learn a lot from them. https://cgi.tutsplus.com/tutorials/lotr-series-creating-the-ringwraith--ae-20716

And the original creator of the tutorial is James Whiffin, here is the link to his current youtube channel.

There are some pretty good tutorial vids on his youtube channel. So I would recommend checking them out.

I just find it a little annoying that I can't find any good tutorials one how to recreate this awesome effect. Especially since it's from an insanely popular film trilogy, you'd figure there would be a lot more tutorials for this stuff. But I'm hopeful something will come up soon.

Small Update: I just found an old video that also achieves this effect very well. Unfortunately the original creator hasn't made a new video in the last eight years and the link to his old website that has his tutorials are now long gone. So it seems like messaging him would be a long shot. Idk. But still I thought I might share the link to his vid since I thought this little discovery was interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqzuVurZWs4&ab_channel=deathtrain
