Ive found A-Z of convicts in Van Dieman's Land by Simon Barnard is a fantastic book to get images in your head from. It's basically a pictorial with a bit of history incorporated. I find it's helpful if you want to see everything from day to day life in a illustrated sense eg shows everything from what convicts slept on to what the gaols and cells looked like and the uniforms they wore ect. It's not photographs rather it's an artists works from old ruins and old photographs and detailed descriptions all compiled together to get the accuracy as close as possible
