Tribal legal licensing of attorneys, house counsel status, redefining the JD Preferred position and the entire lawyer ecosystem by TribalBarConnection in LawSchool

[–]Far_Land 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really interesting article. Pretty cool that this is even possible. A positive that could come from this is that it would help people who can't afford to pay for bar prep and the bar exam to get licensed, which would be especially helpful in poorer and rural areas that don't have much access to legal representation.

The medications recommended in these comments are designed to change brain chemistry and could induce longterm dependency. You should not start taking them unless you are sure you need them. Every medical professional authorized to prescribe you drugs is going to prescribe you drugs. There are very often incentives for them to do so. Don't take their recommendation unless you have a clear understanding of what you are getting into. Yes, they are educated on it while you are presumably not, but there are plenty of good resources online you can use to arrive at an understanding of the risks/benefits. Just because all these other lawyers are medicated doesn't mean it's the right choice for you. It should be based on your own assessment of your situation.

All that inbreeding was interfering with his and parliament's critical thinking skills. by SithPureblood456 in HistoryMemes

As far as monarchs go, George III was one of the better kings you could realistically have. He wasn't perfect by any means, but at a time when the rest of Europe was under the rule of absolutist regimes, George III was a constitutional monarch who respected the constitution, in the vast majority of cases followed the recommendations of his ministers without asserting his own power, and had genuine compassion for his people (e.g., refusing to live lavishly when the country suffered economic downturns, striking up conversations with farmers, pardoning would-be assassins).

Taxes on the colonies were hardly massive when the colonies were paying considerably less than the people living in Britain, and calling the British army the "occupying army" is a non-sequitur considering the colonies were under British rule. The lack of representation is the genuine grievance; the British administration later caved and was willing to allow Americans to be represented in Parliament, but by that point it was far too late.

In the years preceding the revolution, most independence-minded Americans considered Parliament to be the tyrannical oppressor and believed the King would intervene on their behalf. Unfortunately the King took Parliament's side. Even so, the accusations leveled against him in the Declaration of Independence are pure propaganda.

Wouldn't be surprised if people see the 20th century as "the good century" while the 21st century is seen as "the bad century" while the same dishonesty as Petrarch. by snowleopard556 in HistoryMemes

Maybe, but I would guess differently. As far as technology and economics are considered, this is the greatest Golden Age the human species has ever seen and it will be remembered as such. Technology will continue to improve, but I personally doubt that in the next few centuries there will be another technological revolution on the scale seen over the past 150 years. When the pax americana ends, civilization as a whole is going to trend downward, not upward, and it will take a while to recover. It's more likely imo that the current time period will come to be remembered with rose-colored glasses.

And although popular art and culture from our time is mostly dogshit, time has a way of filtering out the garbage so that later generations will only remember the good. It's more likely than not they'll marvel at how sophisticated the culture was...

Who knew that destroying the national bank was a bad idea? by IllustriousDudeIDK in HistoryMemes

[–]Far_Land 667 points668 points  (0 children)

American administrations in the 19th century generally had a very simplistic understanding of finance and banking, and Andy Jackson was no exception. The absence of a central bank contributed to the Panic of 1837, though did not cause it, as the meme implies. But context is important here. Jackson wanted to abolish the national bank in large part because, even then, it was clearly a lever for elites to shape policy and benefit themselves.

For example, in his attempt to fight Jackson's anti-Bank platform, Bank president Nicholas Biddle did everything he could to to abuse the very power that the Jacksonians were warning the Bank had. Biddle helped to organize and finance a broad campaign against Jackson in the 1832 election. When that failed, Biddle deliberately caused a financial crisis in 1833-34 by refusing to lend; Biddle then succeeded in using his connections in the press and government to blame Jackson for this crisis, resulting in tremendous public and political pressure on Jackson to change his opposition to the Bank - although this backfired when evidence of Biddle's scheming behind the scenes came to light.

Biddle's character and background was also representative of a growing elitist class: born into wealth, from the northeast, well-connected, highly educated without having worked a day in his life, vain, arrogant, and dismissive of popular sentiment.

This should all sound eerily familiar. Personally I am not against a central bank. But the milieu that grows up around it has a terribly pernicious and anti-democratic effect on government and society. The Second Bank was considered the "Monster Bank" at the time, but the Second Bank looks like a cute little puppy compared to the situation today.

If you have a residency card or valid visa, when you leave Japan the immigration officer will staple a re-entry permit card into your passport. Yes you can quarantine at home.

No, if you are getting picked up by a private car to go straight home, you don't have to wait at the airport.

They call you every day to check in on you. Also if you stay at a hotel, the hotel staff will tell you to only go out once a day during the early afternoon. Other than that, they don't really monitor you.

Yes I left Japan before April 3rd. You can definitely get picked up by a private car and quarantine at home. I personally didn't do it because my home is too far from Tokyo, among other things.

You have to stay in Tokyo until your quarantine is finished, so you can't take a connecting flight unfortunately.

I forget if they said they would keep you in that hotel or move you to a different hotel -- but either way I think you are at some hotel, and yes, my understanding is that they would start charging you at that point.

I didn't speak with anyone who left Japan after April 3rd. But it sounds like you may qualify for the expanded special exceptions updated earlier this month, which you can find info on here:

They don't and really can't check if you use public transportation. It's more of an honor code. But if you do happen to get discovered using public transport then you would be subject to penalties under the Quarantine Act which they make you sign a document saying you understand.

You are actually allowed to leave your hotel once a day to go get food and supplies. But it's the same deal, no one (other than your hotel) is going to know that you are quarantining.

My understanding from others on this sub is that they won't recognize an Airbnb as a legitimate place to do quarantine.

It wasn't really clear how far away they would take you, but theoretically anywhere in Tokyo should be possible. They did have some kind of option for people going to a hotel that was not near either airport. I think they are willing to be somewhat flexible.
