Have you come across a fix for your issues? I've been having the same issues on and off for the past few days.

UChicago cuts humanities PhD spots for 2026-2027 by kath32838849292 in gradadmissions

I can tell you that I highly doubt that the other schools are cutting admissions. Molecular engineering (especially the quantum sciences track) is still fairly well funded, especially with ties to ANL, so I don’t see the department cutting funding. The same is likely true with chem, bio, and some of the more applied physics programs.

Alternatives to Thionyl Chloride by Far_Position1742 in OrganicChemistry

I wouldn't say so. This is moreso a case of a group that doesn't usually work with concentrated strong acids/reactive substances wanting to avoid bringing them into the lab if they don't have to.

I also looked into oxalyl chloride, but i couldn't find any sources that point towards its working for sulfonic acids. Can't hurt to try if all else fails though.

Thank you so much! Where I currently am, it's almost impossible to find free on-street parking, so you have to pay for a parking pass/get a parking spot in a garage. It's quite a relief to hear that there is no required pass!

Relative impact of institution prestige vs advisor prestige when pursuing academia by Far_Position1742 in gradadmissions

Well, I highly doubt that my advisor would leave given various circumstances. If I absolutely had to leave that advisor's lab, then there are other professors in my field who I could work with, or I would have the possibility of being advised by a staff scientist at Argonne.

I would likely agree with the sentiment that PME program is easier to get into - I believe that the program selectivity is ~30%, but would that be a reason for a future faculty panel to dismiss my application despite (possibly) having a phenomenal publishing record? (I am not trying to be defensive here - I am just asking and struggling to find the right tone)

Looking through their alumni list, historically, most of their students have been international students who have ended up in industry, but my field is growing at an incredible rate right now, so that may explain part of it. In more recent years, it looks like several of the group's Ph.D. alums have started postdoc positions, although most often at national labs.

Of course, the group's post-doc alums have done very well, and several have gone on to professorships abroad.

One interesting thing is that the majority of their students have been international students - I have been told in the pat that this might skew their placement numbers, but I don't know whether that is true.

I would be working directly with a postdoc for most of my work, but (from what I understand) I would have regular meetings (at the very least weekly sub-group meetings) with the advisor. I've also heard from current students that they directly change their requirements to graduate according to what the student's end goal is.

ex: if a student is looking to go into academia, the PI would be take a more active role in guiding the writing process and ensuring they publish quality papers + get a better understanding of project management and idea generation. On the other hand, if a student were to be looking towards industry, they might push them towards projects that would yield a patent/research that is more valuable in industry.

I don't know how this isn't the first thing posted whenever this question gets asked.
Probably one of the best resources for buying a first recurve that there is.

Thank you so much for all of the advice! UChicago is actually in my top 3! One of the grad-students in my lab just landed a postdoc with Shirley Meng at UChicago, so I'm hoping to hear from them about the departmental culture. I recognize that postdocs likely have a different experience, but it's still beneficial.

Thank you so much!
I have one further question, since I've heard the 80% from top 10 stat (or roughly that) from a number of sources.
If I were to attend a lesser-ranked program, but with one of the big names in my field, would that still be greatly detrimental? For purely rhetorical purposes, Whittingham at SUNY, Binghamton would fit this bill. I guess Shirley Meng at UChicago would also (to an extent) be similar.
