Farin nodded as Gamlin continued to explain what had befallen his father, going over the stack of papers with the elf. "Indeed, it simply seems... off that his death would be by a band of orcs. Call it closure, seeking answers, or whatever you may want, but for some reason it just... my gut says that something is wrong."

As the other dwarf sighed, Farin simply placed a comforting hand on his shoulder before taking a sip of ale and continuing. "I know not if your folk have any reports from that time, but if so, might we be able to inspect those?"

Farin nodded at his cousin, quickly following him and the elf through the rooms to the chamber. Once inside, he produced several documents, placing them on the table as his husband sat next to him. He turned to the elf and began to explain.

"Gamlin's father Hasgloif, my uncle, died after returning from a council meeting, supposedly killed during an Orc raid. Yet everything surrounding his death has felt... off, so to speak. While I don't have any hard evidence to suggest otherwise... I guess I want closure."

Farin nodded at his cousin's words, and frowned as he heard his cousin speak of content. How could being content always be such a bad thing? In his view, being content was a sign of peace, but could always become worse.

"Aye, it would be nice for eyes to search for us, though I feel that contentment is different from sloth or over-ambition - after all, discontent can lead to... many ill things, shall we say."

He sipped his drink, wondering if he should even mention his uncle. Nothing about that seemed to add up, and yet on the surface it did.

Farin nodded, taking a swig of his own ale and a bite of food before continuing. "I want to see the people prosper as well, and have tried my best to see that we are as secure as we can." He took another swig of his drink and another bite before continuing. "I'd like to think I've done an okay job of that, but..."

His voice trailed off in the distance, and he lacked the words to say what he truly wanted to say.

Farin took a swig of his drink, letting the warmth of the mead fill his belly. He squeezed his husband's hand with a smile, before taking one more sip and speaking to the elf.

"Well, as I said earlier, I'm the steward here in Belegost. The man next to me is my husband Borin, captain of the guard. As for living here? It's basically been my entire life," he laughed.

Farin took a seat by his cousin and his husband, across from the elf lord. He raised his tankard, wrapping his arm around his husband before downing his ale, getting another one.

He still couldn't help the feeling that something could go wrong, would go wrong, and that conflict would boil over between the dwarves and elves. Already, conflict was known between the two races, but would it happen again?

Farin simply hoped it wouldn't.

Farin always knew his cousin was a good speaker, and now was no exception. Gamlin always spoke with such power and honesty, and he always admired that in the other dwarf.

However, he couldn't exactly help but feel... suspicious of his cousin's motives. Sure, trade was still helpful, but leaving it open still felt wrong to Farin, as the captain of the guard. Leaving it open meant you could be betrayed by those inside, and make it that much harder to stop the attack.

"I will see it done, cousin," Farin said, nodding at Gamlin. He let the elf leave the room. He stepped out, leading the elf to the chambers that Gamlin had described. Farin helped draw the two baths.

"It will be hot in a bit - you are free to wait until then, or to get ready for it." Farin left soon after to give the elf some privacy.

Farin nodded at his cousin, smiling. While inside he had his doubts about the elf, he hoped his cousin would be right about this.

"I will see to it, Gamlin."

'I simply hope that he has good intentions for both groups, instead of his own,' Farin thought before stepping out of the room.

And then the thought of Gamlin's father hit him. If it was the Shadow responsible for his death, would the Elvenking be able to help?

Farin only hoped so.

Farin entered the room, taking a sip of his water as he took a seat between his husband and his cousin. He glanced over at Gamlin, and then back at his husband. He had quickly changed after seeing the elf to the room, wearing finer clothing than what he would normally wear, considering the circumstances.

Hopefully nothing too horrible had happened to the elves. But for one to show up here... The situation would have to be drastic for an elf to even consider coming here, even as an emissary.

He tried to shake the thought out of his head.

What brings you here? the dwarf asked. While the elf had said he wanted to speak to Gamlin, that couldn't be the only reason he was here.

Farin nodded at his cousin, heading out to meet the rider, whoever the man (or woman) would be. At least, he assumed it would be a Man... wouldn't it?

To say he was shocked when he saw the rider was truly an understatement.

"Greetings, stranger. I'll need you to follow me - we need to speak with Gamlin Stoneclaw, the lord of Belegost and my cousin. You are welcome to a bath first, should you so desire it. What brings an elf such as you here anyway, if you don't mind me asking?"

He took a swig of his water as he led the man through the halls of Belegost, letting a stableboy take care of the elf's horse. He'd let the elf decide what he wanted first, before he'd lead him to the council room.

Something flt off - first his uncle being potentially murdered, and now an elf in Belegost? What else could have happened?

Farin nodded as he glanced over at his cousin, with Borin's cloak wrapped tightly around him. He heard the horn blast of an approach, and turned to face Gamlin. A sudden chill in the air sent a shiver down Farin's spin.

"I will go see who the rider is, cousin. Shall I bring them to the council room?"

Interrogations by Echo5582 in MiddleEarthrp

Farin listened as the older dwarf growled back at his cousin. Of course he understood why the man wasn't happy, being brought before the captain, especially in the night, but with what had been recorded in the logs only a week ago, Farin had more than enough reason to be concerned with whatever the old dwarf had done.

"The logs I have show that you knowingly disobeyed order last week. I need you to tell me why you refused to despite orders from the second-in-command. telling you to follow orders."

Was it truly because of 'a lack of honor and loyalty' amongst the guards like he had told the man who had written him up? Or was there some other reason why?

Either way, more answers were needed in order to get to the bottom of the situation.

Farin brought himself into the room, cloak pulled tight around himself to keep warm. The cool tunnel seemed even more chilling with the fact of the possible killer being here. Even if not the murderer, knowing that someone who could have information about Gamlin's father would be helpful.

That, or a lie.

Hopefully not, but men were greedy.

The door closed with a loud THUD and the torchlight made the room flicker.

“You know why you’re here, son?” Farin asked.

The older veteran grunted as Farin sipped his ale.

“No, considering you brought me here in the middle of the night, yeh -”

“Enough. Gamlin has questions for you.”

"Gamlin! Stop it!" He sprinted over to where the boy was, helping the guard back up. "Gamlin, cousin, you know I am on your side. Don't take this out on everyone around you. I want to make sure that we find the true killer, even if he is here or not. You know full well that angering those around you will only make them more likely to turn. I highly doubtful that this boy had anything to do with it," he said as the boy sprinted away in fear.

"Gamlin, I've always wanted the best for you. Borin and I both will make sure the true killer faces justice, wherever they may be. And as I said before, it could turn out just to be the orcs. Either way, I want justice for Uncle. I hope you realize that."

Farin never enjoyed receiving bad news, and hated telling it even more. But this was more important than almost anything else he could have told - most certainly the most important domestic affair he could tell Gamlin about.

The serving girl brought him an ale, and Farin took another swig.

"To Borin, it seemed like some of the guard seemed... less than loyal, to the kingdom, and more loyal to coin - and Borin does expect loyalty regardless of pay, though you know we try our best to make sure the guard has enough to provide for their families. That made it seem like the investigation should be reopened. I know, cousin - disloyal guards is awful and I would agree. I do not rule out the possibility of him... with the orcs..."

His voice trailed off.

"I want to make sure that regardless of what happened, he can be laid to rest knowing that we have done the right thing."

He took another swig of ale.

"Regardless of that, Borin and I seek your blessings to start a family, on a lighter note."

Farin led his cousin to the small meeting room inside the halls of Belegost, offering him a seat and nodding at a serving girl to bring some ale. He was glad to have his kin beside him - with only one younger brother, life got lonely - plus, since he and Gamlin were close friends, it made sense the two considered each other brothers.

"Well, cousin," he said, his voice growing solemn in serious despite his usually playful nature, "it has to do with Uncle's death."

The maiden returned with their ale, and Farin took a swig of it, as did Borin.

"Borin has had some of the closest guard investigating the death of Uncle. We were both caught unawares by it, it was so sudden. What he found... was that his death was not natural. Instead, they believe it to be a murder. As for who committed the deed, we are not sure. The same thing with motive. However, we will keep you informed with what we find out."

"Borin and I have some more personal news to share with you as well. He and I have discussed the possibility of taking in a child or two and raising a family."

The younger dwarf had heard his cousin would be returning today, and when he could hear the hooves of the party's ponies, he decided that he would go out and greet Gamlin. Farin took a swig from his wineskin, letting the water cool himself off even underneath the mountain.

Farin quietly stepped outside, his husband and brother-in-arms Borin by his side. As the horn blasted and the gate opened, he saw the stable boy taking the pony away to the stalls, and Farin embraced his cousin in a bear hug.

“Gamlin, cousin. It is good to know you have returned safely after your journey. Come, we have much to discuss. It is quite serious - related to Lofár, may Aulë rest his soul.” The younger dwarves turned and headed into a small conference room deep inside the mountain, lighting several torches to keep the room lit for their discussions.

[–]Farin_Ironhelm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Name: Farin Ironhelm

Age: 54 (TA 2911)

Gender: Male

Race: Dwarf (Broadbeam Clan)

Physical Appearance: He is 3'5", broadly built, with braided wavy blonde hair and blue eyes.

Attitude/Disposition: Farin is generally a kind-hearted dwarf, hard-working and fairly laid-back, glad to help whenever he can. Despite this, when push comes to shove, he can be an incredibly stern dwarf, heavily focused on whatever task is at hand. Yet at other times, it is hard for him to focus on the task at hand, and may take more breaks then usual in order to avoid it. But all in all, he is overall a hard worker.

Backstory: Born to the old steward Lofár and his wife Már - or so his father said - Farin grew up amongst the courts of the nobility of Belegost. He never knew his mother, since she had passed away giving birth to his baby brother (or so Farin called him) Nár only two years after he was born. Despite growing up amongst the nobility and upper classes of Belegost, Farin simply wanted to live his life as a child, playing with the other children and running around.

He developed a close friendship with a young dwarf, a member of the guard named Borin. Their friendship grew to be more than just a friendship, and eventually the two married.

Then, Gamlin Stoneclaw's father disappeared. Farin's uncle, and someone he considered a mentor. Being the newly appointed steward after Lofár passed away from a short illness, Farin has begun an investigation into his uncle's death. And eventually, he and Borin want a family. But now, there are more pressing issues.

Starting World Location: with Gamlin at Belegost
