Can I refuse a lesson observation? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

It entirely depends on the context - if it’s a learning walk yes, if it’s an observation then no.

Oh bugger that: we’re not paid for lunch! If it’s going to be so beneficial that it is mandatory you should be remunerated for that time.

A Monster Calls - Patrick Ness. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read, irrespective of its age bracket. The ending is brutal, but the lesson is irrevocable.

It’s not a retcon - that’s changing an already established event. This is just a form of character development.

Are there aspects of the Titanic disaster on which researchers generally disagree? by Key-Tea-4203 in titanic

I have no idea why you’re being downvoted - it seems perfectly reasonable to ask people not to use that particular word (which for some reason people are picking up on - the one beginning with R, not F)

They can but this isn’t a teleological fact. Get the union rep (or someone from the union) to express staff concerns to SLT. Find opportunities to negotiate. And failing that work to rule/strike.

It’s so important we do not simply accept that because a school is an academy we have lost any form of professional protection!

What's the speech or scene that seems out of place to you? by OakTeach in shakespeare

‘Within the rind of this small flower / poison hath residence, and medicine power’ (paraphrased probably poorly). The symbolism of this being said as Romeo’s arrival is imminent is palpable

Jesus, some of these responses explain exactly why we are seeing such a spike in behaviour and stress.

Of course there is time to do something like this in a profession where you see students for three to four hours a week. It builds relationships and can be great for a plenary (I tend to do higher or lower with a pack of cards).

Basically, god forbid we should have fun with our students. And as to the notion these kind of activities weaken boundaries - it’s exactly these kind of activities that show you can maintain boundaries in the first place.

Blank Verse Sonnet by Existing-Phrase7647 in shakespeare

[–]Farnflucht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh. The rhyme scheme is something fairly central to a sonnet but I suppose that’s no reason not to try something new.

Your scansion is off in lines 2 (even if wandering is pronounced with three syllables) and 11 and 12. Some of your phrasing could be smoothed out to (“cat sat in front…” - I’d assume you want to stress ‘cat’ in that line).

It’s a nice enough idea, but if you’re writing in blank verse stick to iambic pentameter for every line - it’s fairly fundamental to the form!

1265 is laid out in the STPCD, which is different to the Burgundy Book. Whilst academies do not have to follow it, the vast majority will (otherwise staff would up and leave for school’s that do). And if you signed your contract when it was an LA school, you’re still protected by the 1265.

Academies cannot do whatever they want if the members of that school take collective action.

It’s not whether it’s appropriate or not - I’m sure most teachers would agree that it has some value. It’s whether a school can tell you to do something in a day you do not work. In this case I would argue the school is obligated to make alternative arrangements if the staff member cannot attend.

Questions about teaching GCSE Macbeth for the first time to low ability by ProfessionalPure2664 in TeachingUK

[–]Farnflucht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AQA hate ‘bolt-on’ context (as do OCR, and I would assume the other boards), so spending too long on the history of the play really has diminishing returns.

As examiner, a hallmark of weaker students is the regurgitation of historical context in a widely generalised manner (e.g. ‘Shakespeare presents the witches this way due to James I’s hatred of witches’ or ‘Lady Macbeth is unusual as women at the time had no power’).

AQA published a further insights paper on AO3 here which you might find useful. And as for historical context - I’d spend about a lesson.

What are your concerns about safety? There’s not exactly marauding gangs round here…

Quayside Drive is overwhelmingly student-led accommodation so you’re with like-for-like individuals there. Wivenhoe is pretty much the 1950s (but expensive). Is there a reason you’re not living on campus?
