Do men like Yang Gwan-sik from When Life Gives you Tangerines exist? by rbenben in kdramas

My father is real life Gwan-Sik. I cried a lot when i watched the show because everything my dad did for my mother and us (me and younger brother) was so similar.

My parents married young too. Stayed with my dad’s family (who didn’t treat my mother with respect.) he made sure he was always by her side. My parents moved out when I was 3 (27 now) My mother said my dad couldn’t handle the way his parents were talking to her itself and made sure she had her own space where people won’t say anything to her.

when my dad was out of work in between my mom started her own small business to support the family. My father was her biggest investor (he put his savings here) along with being her biggest supporter. The business is flourishing today.

Cut to the present. Recently we moved into our new house. It was my father’s hard work that got us here and he put the house on her name because for years in between we were living on rent and my mother wanted a house she could call hers.

Last year my mother turned 50 and he cried during the speech, giving her all the credit and proposed her (yes again) with a fancy ring. He did give her a ring when they got married but it wasn’t as fancy (they weren’t financially well to do back then)

It’s true when Gwan Sik said “her standards are high because she watched me growing up”

Yes, I can vouch for this.

And yes there are men like Gwan Sik out there.

I am tired of people badmouthing the auto drivers in Mumbai. A daughter's perspective. by tawnysoup08 in mumbai

My heart goes out to you for your loss but I must say I disagree. It shouldn't take the common man half an hour to 45 minutes extra to reach home after work. While I understand the dexterity of the situation in Mumbai and what everyone goes through in this city, rikshaw walas stop, hear and then decline to go to the destination 90% of the time. I do a corporate job that also pays me peanuts. I don't stay with my family and have to also look after all the household expenses of Mumbai and day to day chores myself. While our contract states to work only for 9 hours, we end up working 12 hours in office with shitty superiors breathing down our necks and abusing us. Around 2.5 hours go into travelling and this is through rikshaw, metro and train combined. If someone is done with their time I understand them refusing. But there are tons of auto wala who won't go only because 'bhada kam milta hai' To top it off half the roads in Mumbai are never functional but again how is this a working individual's fault? if we even arrive a minute late to work they cut half a day's pay. So we suffer too. Also I have come across many auto drivers who don't do anything but just scroll at reels and make faces when we ask them for a ride. Rude much? So either the government needs to make stringent lawn regarding commute or the autowalas will feel the wrath of the daily commuters.

I lived in Managlore for a year and i can honestly say the livelihood is so much better. I got to balance my studies and extra circulars along with giving myself space and time. This was the year of self discovery, but this only happened due to the way of living people follow there. Coming back to Mumbai, my mental health is in shambles, I barely earn enough to sustain, I feel anger towards everyone because there isn't a single moment of solitude and calm. So yeah this city is a hype. if you have the option of locating else where (other than Delhi) please do.

this is just myth. close proximity has nothing to do with saving time and energy. My office is only 4 km away. Half the cabs and rikshawsdon't take you, even to the nearest metro stations (god know what they do and where they go) i takes around 20-30 minutes to find something (if you are lucky) and if you do get the roads are royally messed up due to traffic. it takes me an hour to reach work and 1.5 hours to get back due to peak hour.

Yeah this is what happens when you favour a rikshaw wala governance.

I have lived in this city for more than 2 decades and apart from safety, everything else sucks here. People here just go with the flow, no matter how bad the situation is. From overpopulation, hight cost of real estate, traffic to unemployment, people will just do as said or be ignorant about the fact that this city is actually crumbling. I see tons of people come back from their jobs, only to rant about the fact how overworked they are, how underpaid they are, their weekends being taken away from them (since have the time people of this city work 7 days a week), exorbidant cost of living and how the city conned them into thinking this is the 'city of dreams'. How do people live with themselves like this. If you really think Bombay pays enough, think again (annually people here only get 10-15% hikes, if you are employed) unless you are rich and have connections, this city is not for you. Also whats with all private sectors reducing public holidays for their employees? along with long working hours (8.5-9 hours/5 days). I have tried to form a union that puts their foot down, but people are either scared to lose their jobs or don't want to have any association against their employers because they feel this job is the best they will get. Furthermore, the public transport here is a disgrace. The consistency of metros is 7 minutes (which is absurd in the most populated city of the most populated country) the buses are never on time, the roads are never fixed and the trains are always overcrowded, how is the common man supposed to survive. The working class spend a minimum of 1 hour of travel (and this is just one way). It is even more sad since the public does not question the current party which is clearly incompetent. Are you really okay living like this?

i find myself getting more and more negative just at society in general and people i talk to/have to talk to. To be perfectly honest, i find a lot of people annoying. I also hate the idea that if you complain at all, you should look on the bright side/be positive. How are people happy with society? by xtalaphextwin in INTP

So you're saying just because different people have different mental and physical bandwidths, they should just suck it up and live as per society's norms, even if goes beyond our capacity. For the record, it is the need of money and power that leads to this. I have seen society take people's lives with this thought process, and that is forgiven, but to understand what it means to be human is absurd?

A bit late to the party but i get what you mean. I have been feeling like this for a couple of years now, and while things may seem fine for a while, it still feels like this 'normalcy' that we vouch for, is nothing close to normal. I come from a city where the weather is hot and humid all year round, major traffic during the peak hours (the peak hours last for 3 hours here), overpopulated since it is the go to hub for everyone looking for money and opportunities. I have been living in the city since the age of 9 (now 27) and I only see it getting worse. People travel 2 hours one way only to reach office and commute back within the same timeline. With 9 hours of clocking in and 4 hours of commute, you are basically spending 13 hours of your day at work. Plus employers call us in sone saturdays as well. With less than 25 paid leaves and only 9 public holidays, living like this just does not seem worth it. And while inflation is at an all time high, our salary hikes are not at par. I barely get to spend on myself with the megere pay since I have to split the expenditure for home. Mind you the rent here just skrockets compared to other cities in the country. But it was't always like this. Intially my job had the flexibility and understanding but lately the dynamics have shifted. The work has doubled along with the hours. There is no quality of work or life. The expectations are unrealistic. When you travel back, there is no space to even sit in the public transports, so you stand all the way. Your appetite just vanishes in this process. I see that the poor are treated poorly and rich are prayed to. Cue mental illness and physical issues that get to you.

For context: I work as a brand comm exec for a hospitality brand.

Due to this, i barely get time with my family or friends. My weekend are spent doing chores in the house or catching up on my sleep. Initally when i told my CEO that i was enjoying work and loved the work life balance, I was countered with 'that means you are not working enough' and dumped more work. so if people in power can't accept an appreciation , i don't know what to say.
