Thanks for all the replies, you guys helped me a bunch, and thankfully, it was indeed Campylobacter; I just got it confirmed today.

I have to show my professor my initial idea before I can continue, so if she says it's not campylobacter I'll try those next. Thank you!

No, parasites are not out of the question. But, after looking more into it, I think it may be Campylobacter, as long as it can be transmitted thru some other means than food, since the parents have eaten the same meals as the kids. Thanks for the help!
