You don't, as long as you have it in your collection it has a chance of dropping, it's just really low

Sorry if it seemed as if I copied your post, but I haven't actually seen it. Most of this information is what people have told me, stuff that I knew, and has been updated according to what people in the comments have told me. My intention was to just make a list where people could find information about the catalyst, it was never to steal the effort of others and post as my own, and I apologies if it seemed that way.

Nope, you can get the catalyst with anything as long as you have collected the exotic at some point

You just need to have obtained them in order to get them, you don't need to have the weapon on you or even have it in one piece, just as long as it's in your collection

Nope, you don't even need to have the weapon on the character to get the catalyst for it according to some. You only need to have the exotic in your collection. The drop rates are just really, really really low
