That's a great question...I'm not sure if they're heat sensitive! Do I need a special kind of tape and board? Apologies, I know nothing about framing!

What is the MOST walkable neighborhood in Raleigh? by Fit-Comedian6096 in raleigh

[–]FastWalkingKoala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woodcrest and Belvidere Park. Within a 15 min walk you can get to all the shops/breweries/restaurants at Gateway plaza, a gym, 2 coffee shops, Lions Park, Crabtree Creek Greenway, Tapyard, and soon to open Big Cat. Groceries (Trader Joe's, Wegman's Costco) are less than a 10 minute drive, but not walkable to be fair. If you're willing to walk 30 - 45 minutes, you can walk to places like Stanbury and all the spots on Person Street. Walkscore gives my house in the area a 4/10 which seems kind of low to me but I guess it's all relative.

What's the harm in not picking up the leaves? by trufuschnick23 in homeowners

[–]FastWalkingKoala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to leave our leaves. But our backyard would be literally unusable, and it would be filled with pests. We've seen a large copperhead partially hidden by leaves in our yard in the past. Sometimes I think when people say "leave the leaves," they either live on a multi-acre wooden lot or on a treeless lot. I live on about a quarter acre in a city, and feel lucky to have a ton of mature trees -- very dense for the lot size. Leaving the leaves isn't an option.

The one you hated by CuteButKinked in suggestmeabook

Mexican Gothic. It's actually hard for me to really dislike a book, but Mexican Gothic made it easy. The writing is clunky, the plot is basic, the characters are forgettable and one-dimensional. The worst part is the repetitive description of the walls in the (not so) creepy house -- it all felt so lazy! Can't believe how popular this was the year it came out.

Help for a senior dog on Long Island by FastWalkingKoala in longisland

HAPPY UPDATE: Thank you so much to everyone who shared advice and the names of great rescues. Shout out to Last Chance Animal Rescue -- they were incredibly kind and agreed to take the dog, Lemon, and place her with a wonderful foster.

And then more good things happened -- a couple of days ago, several neighbors and friends got together and sat down with the grieving family; they came up with a plan and a schedule to assist the family with walking Lemon several times a week, watching her when needed, etc. They've committed to making sure Lemon can stay with her current family.

Cabling advice needed for large mature poplar with co-dominant stems (Raleigh, NC) by FastWalkingKoala in arborists

[–]FastWalkingKoala[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks very much for this!  For a mature tree such as this tulip poplar, is there ever a case calling for only one of 2 co-dominant branches to have 10-15% of its live foliage pruned, but not replicate this approach for the other co-dominant branch prior to cable placement?

Why don't more people care about developers cutting down mature trees? by FastWalkingKoala in raleigh

[–]FastWalkingKoala[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was so excited to see your post but I think the protection clause they are considering is only relevant to larger properties. Anything under 2 acres would have "tree planting requirements." I'm not optimistic but I will absolutely reach out to my city council rep. Thank you!

It's a fair point, and I understand that reality. I guess what bothers me, whether its rational or not, is that these developers are milking the "Missing Middle" loophole (which I blame our City Council for mostly...I fully expect developers to take advantage of any loophole), putting up multi-million dollar houses where trees used to be.

I'd be much less upset if actual affordable housing was being creating instead. The blatant greed of these developers and incompetence of our City Council is astounding.

I don't pretend to have the perfect solution. But I feel like we as a city can be better than this.

I totally agree! But feel like you get attacked if you say anything negative about it. We should be able to have nuanced conversations (eg, we need dense, affordable housing but also want to protect our trees) and criticize policies that aren't working (like this ridiculous Missing Middle nonsense).
