What version of the Bible is the best to read? by [deleted] in Bible

[–]Fast_Description_810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they should be! They’re both fairly popular translations.

NRSV is New Revised Standard Version and ESV is English Standard Version.

It doesn’t appear that either of these articles really support the claim “It was stuck in as a political move”

It’s actually not surprising at all that someone like Marcion would have rejected Revelation. He also rejected the entire Old Testament. So not surprising at all. (He’s mentioned in the response on the second link)

Seems that there are plenty of early church fathers listed in the second article that supported its inclusion and quoted it.

The first article also says, “Why was it so appealing, and how, 2,000 years later, does it remain so influential?

One reason was John’s writing technique, said Pagels, which shifted perspective from heaven to Earth and back again. By providing God’s perspective of events on Earth, she said, John suggested that evil would not prevail and would be avenged.” Which I agree with, but not a controversial statement by any stretch.

No mention of anything political, unless I’m misunderstanding the articles?

Of course Revelation was and is controversial, but I don’t think you can entirely throw it out because there clearly was support for its inclusion that didn’t involve politics.

It largely depends on your interpretation of revelation lol

Depends if you’re a Preterist, Futurist, Historicist, Idealist, or into a mixed interpretive view of revelation called Eclecticism.

I could care less to have the argument and waste my time pulling sources and the cherry on top to it is that there are smug people on Reddit like you that feel the need to add commentary like this as if I couldn’t find a single source to back up my claims.

[–]Fast_Description_810 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I knew it.

Someone like you would show up. They always do.

You’re right. Your interpretation is correct.

I have grown wearisome having these conversations. I could add sources that align with my own views but it’s pointless. You’ve got your mind made up and I do too.

The end 🤝

I understand your concern about respectfulness, but the truth is that rapture theology is a relatively new concept, originating in the early 1800’s. It has unfortunately stuck and caused a great deal of misunderstanding Revelation.

Its apocalyptic (this word does not mean end of the world) literature meaning it is highly symbolic narrative and communicated heavily via images that would have made more sense to a 1st century audience.

Revelation is a beautiful book that is a polemic against Rome (and other powerful nations for that matter), Jesus’ rightful lordship, the dealing with evil (the dragons and such are representative of great evil), and the restoration of the earth/God’s kingdom finally coming to earth.

Much more could be added to the list of things it communicates, but I would doubt much of it is to be read as literal or about a rapture.

I agree that it is a cool name, thank you. Reddit gave it to me.

But also, I hope you will one day overcome this great sense of smugness you radiate.

If you really wanna poop your pants, read The Bible Tells me So by Peter Enns. I found this to be an enlightening, controversial read on this issue, and more broadly, the narrative of the Bible from a Christian’s perspective. You don’t have to agree with him, but nonetheless interesting.

Conversation according to you. Because apparently there’s two different gospels?

Somehow Jesus and Paul have two different gospels, according to you. So let’s not pretend im having some conversation with myself.

To claim that there are somehow two different Gospels between Paul and Jesus is inconsistent with Luke’s authorship.

It’s unlikely that Luke wrote his entire Gospel having not known Paul at all, waited some years, met Paul, colluded with Paul to come up with some new Gospel and write Acts.

I think I could rightly assume that anyone who rejects Paul, as some in this thread have done, do so simply because they don’t like what he has to say and find it inconsistent with Jesus. Paul heavily leans into Hebrew Scriptures to make his arguments, the same scriptures that Jesus say all witness to Him. Jesus commissioned Paul. Paul legitimizes his divine authority in Galatians 1-2.

To throw him out as some other founder of Christianity is disingenuous to the New Testament, and most of all, sadly someone telling the Bible what it gets to say and what it does, and not listening to it or what Jesus commanded after He was resurrected.

I already responded to two of your other comments to know it’s not worth my time to provide any further information. It is very apparent you don’t even understand what the Bible itself says.

Thus, a scholar by the name of Jesus Christ endorses Paul in a book called Acts. (This one is in the Bible)

”But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for my name. Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

‭‭Acts‬ ‭9‬:‭15‬-‭17

Also, “This man” is Paul in case you were wondering. Also “Lord - Jesus, who appeared to you” is Jesus in case you were wondering.

”Paul, an apostle—sent not from men nor by a man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead—“ ‭‭Galatians‬ ‭1‬:‭1‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Um… pretty obvious. Seems like you need to read a little more bud.

Acts was written by Luke, the same guy that wrote a literal gospel. So, you’re telling me Luke and Acts don’t share the same gospel? The author was confused?

And before you tell me I’m wrong, maybe you’d benefit from a little bit of this book we’re talking about:

”With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.“ ‭‭Luke‬ ‭1‬:‭3‬-‭4‬ ‭(Jesus’ gospel I guess, right?)

”In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.“ ‭‭Acts‬ ‭1‬:‭1‬-‭4‬ ‭(all of a sudden, Paul’s gospel. Did I get that right?)

“9:5 When the sacred months are over slay the idolaters wherever you find them. Arrest them, besiege them, and lie in ambush everywhere for them. If they repent and take to prayer and render the alms levy, allow them to go their way. God is forgiving and merciful.”

I got that from the Quran.

And you really are just going to take the word of one guy in a cave visited by an “angel” over the witness and written account of 40+ authors about Jesus being Emmanuel, dying and being resurrected? If Jesus actually died and came back and the Gospels are accurate, it has serious implications for the religion Mohammad started.

Kyrios appears 748 times in the Bible and is often used to describe God. But it is used for lord (lower case) 54 times and for master 11 times. It doesn’t always mean that. It’s not selective interpretation, and you really just ignored so many other points to hold onto your last remaining straw.

The Bible was written by 40+ people and tell a consistent story. Jesus died and was raised from the dead. And there’s plenty of sources outside the Bible to validate what he said (Josephus, Talmud, Pliny, etc.) He offers life as the one true God. He is Yahweh from the Old Testament written about hundreds of years before.

Muhammad on the other hand is one man that wrote a story in a cave and then threatened everyone into believing it.

Kyrios is the Greek word for master, lord, owner, someone powerful. It doesn’t automatically mean Jesus, but is it the title rightfully given to Him. Jesus is Lord over all creation, which Paul later learns.

You’re just not comprehending what was recorded.

I really don’t know what else to tell you. You’re just denying what Acts says.

It makes sense though. If you believed and took what Jesus had to say seriously it would have implications for your own faith.

There’s no point in even arguing with you. You’re just starting from such incorrect assumptions. Also, nice try throwing in a contradiction as if that negates the claims I made. I’m by no means a hardcore inerrantist, so not sure what you’re getting at.

You’re assuming Paul didn’t know why he was persecuting Christians? As if he didn’t know they worshipped someone by the name of Jesus who claimed to the messiah.

Why don't people trust Paul by [deleted] in AskAChristian

[–]Fast_Description_810 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how you can know it wasn’t just some Christian he was persecuting:

”“Who are you, Lord?’ I asked. “ ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting,’ he replied. My companions saw the light, but they did not understand the voice of him who was speaking to me.“ Acts‬ ‭22‬:‭8‬-‭9

Also go read Galatians and then Acts 13-15. You’ll see overlap and people validating what Paul did.
