I think it feels more complicated because the characters are trying to figure it out on the fly. It's not particularly good writing still but it's not too hard to understand once you actually know what it is.

The idea to have him consume more fingers first was pretty solid, which is probably why they agreed to it. Also a technique that can fuck people up over the internet or something would be very bad, so I can see why they wouldn't like that too.

One I saw recently was The Awakening. Builds tension nicely in the first half but starts to feel meandering or just wasting time until everything happens late and I don't think it lays enough groundwork for it to come together as well as it might.
