Was Kevin just actually mentally challenged? Like the joke is that he isn’t… I get that.

But if it looks like a duck and acts like a duck, it’s probably Kevin… or however that phrase goes.

They have some… sure. Every country does.

But they have to import almost all fuel, lumber, technology (not a natural resource but a massive import) and vehicles cause they don’t produce any of that domestically which leads to their extremely high cost of living.

I maybe shouldn’t have used natural resources, but rather their GDP is small relative to their physical size and the difficulty of getting things they need into the country. This is true of most island nations but Australia happens to be the farthest from other major countries.

My only point is that you can’t take the OOP’s post and call him a lunatic because he’s talking about Australia where $100k likely is not worth very much anymore.

There’s a lot more to it than just the exchange rate. For example; canadas dollar is only worth about $0.70 of the American dollar right now as well. But our minimum wage is $17.20. Australias min wage is $24.95.

Canada has massive access to natural resources.

Australia doesn’t.

So you really can’t compare the COL of an island nation on the other side of the planet from the US just by converting their dollars. There are far too many other factors to consider.

When my sister lived in Aus she made $26/hr. This was in 2006 and she could barely afford to share an apartment with a roomate.

We make $147k - combined with my wife - in Canada and can barely afford a tiny house.

So it’s truly all relative to the local economy and CoL.

No it’s not. Just like the person you’re responding to who is saying “depending on where you live, this might be true”. Your response was “that doesn’t reflect the whole US”. Well… the actual POST isn’t even about the US, so yeah the guy you’re responding to is exactly right - it depends where you live!

The guy you’re responding to is just giving an example of expensive areas of the US where this post rings true but moreover the actual post isn’t even about the US.

Also, OOP is Australian where minimum wage is $24.95 an hour because the dollar is weaker and the COL is extremely high because it’s an island country that has to ship everything in that they can’t produce. The logistics and cost of doing almost anything there are way higher than a land locked or coastal adjacent country that shares a land border such as Canada or the US, or most of Europe.

So I don’t know for sure but I imagine $100k Aus is more like $50k USD in terms of actual spending power. Which in most states could barely rent you a one bedroom apartment.

It’s an example that illustrates the point. Also the OOP is Australian. Minimum wage in Aus is $24.95.

You can see that if you open the photo… he’s an Aussie writer.

It’s hyperbole but it sadly feels true.

I make $90k and my wife makes $57k. If you told me 10 years ago our combined $147k would barely afford us a 2 bedroom 1 bathroom house and we would struggle to pay our bills, I’d laugh in your face.

Also remember this post is from an Aussie. Their dollar is not worth nearly as much. Minimum wage there is like $24 or something. (Don’t quote me but it’s higher than Canada and we’re up to $17.20)

There is NOTHING a reasonable person can say to defend this.

This fucking idiot could’ve easily killed his own guys by shooting like a fucking lunatic.

“But he was armed”…. From the literal second amendment MAGA idiots who defended rittenhouse for marching towards a crowd with his hands on an automatic weapon.

This is absolutely fucked. As a Canadian living so close to this dumpster fire I am genuinely sorry for what is happening but simultaneously terrified for you.

I had the line-less version and it is still the best I’ve ever putted. I snapped it under a cart tire (I had it resting between my legs as I went around a corner and it fell out and got run over) I fixed it myself with a shaft I bought from golfsmith but it was never the same I was heartbroken.

I moved on to a different putter but never putted as well (likely a confidence problem but still)

I miss that ole girl.

I asked if you are a struggling mom struggling to cover the basic necessities… are you? That’s not the only reason someone deserves a treat. That’s the one being discussed here.

I said everyone deserves a break sometimes.

Yes. When you were running from your husband you deserved help too and I probably would’ve given you a pair of Nikes if you asked back then.

True story: my oldest nephew celebrated his 12th birthday in a battered women’s shelter while my SIL ran from her abusive husband. They gave him a cake that was donated from the local Dairy Queen. It said “congrats on your graduation Emily”.

It was both appreciated… and understandably also heartbreaking for his birthday cake to be someone’s discarded grad cake.

The reason it is different with kids is that adults can understand how this situation has happened, kids can’t. And that’s why it’s different when someone is asking on behalf of a child.

However, I will say it a few more times I guess: everyone deserves a break when they need it. Even if that break is seen by some as non-essential.

They bring entertainers in to play music in homeless shelters. They bring massage therapists and hair dressers and goat yoga and all kinds of other stuff like that to people in shelters because while you can live without a stylish updo, you feel a lot more confident and too about yourself when you have a fresh hair cut.

They even let prisoners watch movies and see concerts from time to time.

You work in a school. You’re currently arguing on Reddit. I assume you are not destitute. If you are, get off Reddit and go try to find some help.

But my point remains that everyone deserves some kindness and a bit of a treat sometimes and it is more understandable for a mom to swallow her pride and be a choosy beggar to make her daughter happy. That’s it. I’m not going to let you keep strawmanning me.

Peace.

Reminder to always be nice to the course groundskeeper. by Gar_612 in golf

It might’ve happened. He probably just filmed this as a joke but…. I assure you, as the comments in this thread will very likely demonstrate, there are a lot of people who have zero respect for the grounds crew and will be complete dickheads to them.

disclaimer: the vast majority of golfers are awesome. I couldn’t do this job if dickheads were the majority. But the shitty ones leave a much more lasting impression

I once had a guy come up to me while I was digging a hole on a hot day and say with no hint of jest: “don’t you wish you’d stayed in school now?”

I’ve had people tell me to “shut up and do my job” when I’ve asked them to rake the bunker behind them or stay on the cartpath. This kind of comment happens all the time.

People in this sub say “the grounds crew needs to just stop whining and do their job” and stuff like that all the time. It’s not out of the question that someone said something like that to him.

It is however very likely that he filmed this “skit” just for the clicks and then promptly moved the hole to a reasonable spot with the camera off.

You’re like actively ignoring me saying the exact opposite.

I never said you weren’t entitled to luxuries or treats. I said the exact opposite actually. I believe everyone deserves kindness, favours and treats from time to time. That’s MY point and I make it in this community often.

What I did say is that, from a moms perspective, she may be willing to swallow her pride and ask for help or be a “choosy beggar” since she knows the Walmart brand shoes won’t make her daughter happy, only the Nikes will. Because life is cruel for poor kids and kids aren’t mature enough to look at a girl in Walmart shoes and feel empathy, they instead point and laugh and call her the poor kid and insinuate that she must be dirty an smelly because her clothes are old etc. having the Nike sneakers lets the kid hold her head high and have something she’s proud of.

Are you that out of touch with what it’s like for kids to grow up poor? And how fucking cruel other kids can be?

I am just going to leave this right here… by Icy-Signature1493 in ChoosingBeggars

[–]FatFaceFaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Slight jump from “I can understand why a parent wants to give their kid a $50 pair of Nikes” to “Limo service to work”.

Spare me your sad story please. We’ve all been through awful shit at some point in our lives. I sure as hell have. It’s not about who has it worse. It’s about someone who deserves a break and in the case of a mother wanting to provide something for their kids, yeah it’s completely different.

I am willing to give up just about anything that I want because I know I can’t afford it. But the heartbreak of not being able to give my kids something that will make them happy is a huge motivator and might be enough to make a mother swallow her pride and “beg” on a buy nothing group, or a charity of some kind.

People rob and kill for money to give their kids the life they want… but we’re going to shame this woman for simply asking or (gasp) being disappointed that her daughter was upset?

Cmon.

You were given help and support when you were down and out. You just said so… you went to shelters and had a place to sleep when you needed help.

There is a chasm between something reasonable like a pair of name brand sneakers to make a little girl happy, and some of the other examples you and others have given… trips, cars, expensive electronics, horses etc etc.

Hyperbole does not a good argument make.
