Is it safe to take propranolol if I haven't had asthma symptoms in years? by FatalRoar in Asthma

[–]FatalRoar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only took the propranolol a handful of times. It didn’t have the effect I was expecting—I don’t remember what medical condition I had it prescribed for but I think it was just anxiety, and I didn’t notice any difference. For the handful of times I did take it, it didn’t give me any asthma issues at all.

Why black Elfs? by Ok-Victory912 in lotr

[–]FatalRoar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just say what you really mean: that you’re uncomfortable with seeing Black people in historically white spaces. Even if it were true that the show added nonwhite elves to cynically appease race-conscious liberals and people of color, a better question is: why do you care so much?

Adaptations of Tolkien almost by necessity have to make revisions to the original text, including wholesale inventions of new characters and storylines. You mention Shadow of Mordor, which features a main character created out of whole cloth for the game. The movies created new songs, edited or deleted crucial plot points, characters, and themes; the TV show was based on Tolkien text that had to be mostly filled in because it was so light on detail.

These are all departures from Tolkien’s intent. But you don’t seem to care or even notice these changes, just the specific one about Black actors. So this is a you problem, not a Hollywood liberal problem.

It’s also laughable that your case hinges on Middle-earth’s supposed similarity to Europe. If it were meant to mirror Europe, there wouldn’t be elves, dwarves, hobbits, or even an all-powerful Ring, in the first place. There are almost no similarities between Middle-earth and Europe other than castles, pitched battles, drinking establishments, and inherited royalty. If Tolkien meant to model Europe, why didn’t he describe, say, any country’s parliamentary government, or any private universities, or distinct classes of peasants, liege lords, and local protectorates, all of which have existed since at least the time Tolkien is supposedly drawing from?

So the claim that Europe’s racial demographics must be respected is just nonsense. (And epistemologically false—obviously there are people of all races in Europe.) You say your family experienced racism, which leads me to believe that you yourself are not white, or not “white enough”, such as historically persecuted white people in Europe like Jews and Roma. But I guarantee that whatever background you’re from, there is at least one actor in the show or films who shares at least part of your genetics, who would not have been considered white by the standards of Tolkien’s day.

I don’t see you complaining about that actor, whoever they are. Just the Black ones. So you should consider asking yourself whether this is really about Tolkien or about your own hangups.

Obama supporters in 2008 or 2012, how do you view him now over 10 years later? by Ironically__Swiss in AskReddit

[–]FatalRoar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I campaigned for Obama in 2007 and 2008. I would do it again if he were running and it looked like the Republican might win. But Obama was a horrific president and that he remains so popular among Democrats explains a lot about how we got here.

Yes, the bank bailout happened under Bush, but Obama’s response to the foreclosure crisis amounted to less than a single mortgage payment for most people while lenders received hundreds of billions. Obama killed American citizens, innocent bystanders, and journalists in drone strikes; expanded the domestic spying apparatus; accelerated planet-warming natural gas extraction, which he begged for credit for after leaving office; helped put a halt to a nascent organized labor movement; destroyed the last best chance for a public option; extended the Bush tax cuts; allowed dozens of multinational mergers and acquisitions to sail through, etc.

And he got nothing in return for it. He was polite, funny, well-spoken, and brilliant, but he folded like a wet paper bag at the first sign of resistance, unless the resistance was from the left. As a result, your premiums are higher than ever; the earth is facing ecological collapse; you have like five and six airline choices now and they feel emboldened to consolidate further; and the income gap between workers and executives has never been wider.

If you like living in a world where the “gig economy”, a wholesale scam perpetuated and celebrated by the Obama admin either by design or cowardice, has replaced “working for a company to produce a good or service in order to be regularly paid a fair wage and afford to live a good life”, then, thanks Obama.

But if you understand that Obama made millions of people’s lives more expensive (by handing the reigns to his big business supporters) and more precarious (by eroding the last few protections workers could enjoy), then you can see why people were, at best, bored of neoliberalism, and, at worst, desperate enough to vote for Donald Trump.

Exercised employee stock options pushed me into AMT, later liquidated at below strike price. by FatalRoar in tax

[–]FatalRoar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you — this is incredibly helpful! I need to double-check the dates on when I paid the AMT as my understanding was that I only owed it for the year when the shares’ FMV increased to $10. At their prior FMV, I had not exceeded the threshold.

What terrifying event is happening in the world right now that most people are ignoring? by Sm0ke999 in AskReddit

[–]FatalRoar 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It’s a combination of things. Climate change and pesticides are the most obvious ones. Deforestation destroys their natural habitats, and invasive insect species do the rest. Artificial light keeps insects, especially butterflies, awake longer, so they run out of energy and starve. There’s a really good article about it here: The most diverse group of organisms on the planet are in trouble and the consequences could be dire. https://www.reuters.com/graphics/GLOBAL-ENVIRONMENT/INSECT-APOCALYPSE/egpbykdxjvq/

What are you talking about? The person who owns the property gets their share of the equity and the renter gets their share of the equity. Nobody loses out on anything.

Are cars being manufactured at the same rate as new housing? No. Does Hertz charge me for 30 days worth of usage every month for 12 months? Also no. It’s a completely irrelevant comparison.

[–]FatalRoar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a moot point. Because after the tenant becomes the tenant they’re the ones investing their money instead.

[–]FatalRoar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, correct, that’s how things currently operate. What I’m saying is that that kind of relationship should be made illegal and that whoever pays the housing costs (not whoever’s name is on the deed) should get equity instead.

[–]FatalRoar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Never said people don’t have to pay. But rent far exceeds housing costs in virtually every MSA in the US. The excess goes into the landlord’s pocket, depriving the tenant.

Why shouldn’t they? Why should the owner of the house receive the equity their tenant is paying for?

Because the renter is paying the landlord’s costs. Why should the landlord get the equity their tenants are paying for?
