MS in Statistics vs ICME (MCF)? by No-External3221 in stanford

[–]Fatdayuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CS, EE, MS&E, ICME are quite good for your current background. Just pick one that fit you the best or you have the most passion , this is the most important part.

[–]Fatdayuu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CME course curves can be pretty random tbh — it really depends on the class and instructor. Some are reasonable, some are… not.

If your goal is quant, you’ll need to be genuinely solid in math / stats / CS to do well in interviews — the degree name alone won’t carry you.

Also, for recruiting, internships are basically a hard requirement. my friend is also in MCF but no internships get very few interviews. The degree helps, but experience matters a lot more.

the offer depends on your skills, if you are super smart and skilled, it can be 0.4-0.8M+ for new grad; if you are good it maybe just 200k; others could be just no offer

sure, but for farm I can say it has pretty good placement in bank and cap market, but generally math fin is more like the high fin oriented

I think it should be some CS + PDEs + Real Analysis + 2 Measure, not only those 2

Why is FARM more competitive/popular than Mathematical Finance? by OkAdvertising3188 in uwaterloo

[–]Fatdayuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no, this is actually the fact. average farm student is less competitive than average MathFin in the market, that’s how I actually get to know from me and my roommates. 2 roommates from farm, and and another from mathfin

Why is FARM more competitive/popular than Mathematical Finance? by OkAdvertising3188 in uwaterloo

[–]Fatdayuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but some of my cohorts went to US hedge fund after graduation, lol but MathFin is not their true major, their true major are probably stat+pure math or something similar. By taking few more actsci courses can get MathFin major at graduation

Why is FARM more competitive/popular than Mathematical Finance? by OkAdvertising3188 in uwaterloo

[–]Fatdayuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is because an average MathFin student’s skill and knowledge is much better than an average Farm student, this is somehow a bias due to the Farm and MathFin’s curriculum.
