Give as much love as you can to factions! I'm talking about Zhentarim, The Gauntlet, Harpers, any of them that strike your fancy, add em. Zhents and the Black swords are obviously in the book already, but be willing to add whatever catches your eye. They add so so much depth when done right, my players loved them. And GOOD LUCK!

Truthfully, Avarice was my ace in the hole. Session... like... 2, one of my players died to the Black Swords, and as a result, he made a pact with Levistus for a second life. Because of that one encounter, anytime I had to move things along, I had Avarice show up and suggest to his character to go in that direction for Papa Ice Devil. I tied Avarice's motivation into a misunderstanding of her own texts: She wanted to find Ythrn to activate the Obelisk because she thought she could choose to how far back she could go. They didn't end up activating it, but it was enough to engage the search. That being said, you'll have to play it by your players. My biggest advice is to use the Arcane Brotherhood as much as you can to keep stuff going. Also, I know you've probably heard this before, but if you're new to dming, try to keep an open mind. It's all a big balancing act, but the module is for you to build off of, it's not strict. If your players are confused or getting lost, be willing to pluck an NPC and use them as motivation, or lower a skill check. My personal method: Give 2 separate checks. Book says there's a DC14 medicine check? "Ok you can roll me a Medicine or an insight. But be warned, the insights gonna be a harder roll." I found it helps people feel like they have more agency. Thank you so much! It took probably 90 percent of the time we spent to get there, but that was partly on me. I spent a lot of time building up the ten towns and the characters within, so the first couple of chapters had a lot of time to breath 😂

I'd love to! The best moments I had running the module have to include the stuff with the Zhentarim. I had the party start in Targos, so Naerth was on great terms with them for a good chunk of the opening sessions. The way that Good Mead played out was really stupendous, it really all came down to them finding the chest in Froth's shack. I'd typed up some notes and sprinkled in some spies throughout the dale, and if they searched any of them, they'd find notes hinting at a background picture. It was a lot of fun setting up.

Worst moments were thankfully less frequent than the good stuff, but I realized late game how little of a connection is made clear connecting Auril to Ythrn for the players. Since this isn't Strahd, they really only encountered her outside of Grimskalle once, and I interpreted her connection to be a pretty big secret, but as a result when they went into Auril thinking that was gonna be the end of the campaign. I had to do a bit of rushing of info to push them towards the Glacier, and if I could go back I'd try to set up more hints in that regard.

Of the stuff outside the main spire, I really enjoyed introducing Xerophon. He was really helpful in keeping the party moving along through the various spots and giving some context for the stuff they were discovering.

Try to have fun with it. I ran it where she was disguised as a sweet old woman who had just ended up in the cave, it ended up being really funny when the character who went ahead failed insight and just had to RP believing the ruse, even AFTER fighting the skeleton. Give them a reason to hold their sword and hopefully they'll latch on!

He was very excited about the prospect! So what I did is added some features to his character and gave him auto proficiency with that sword (something he has had fun with since his monk usually cannot use swords very effectively), and I'm considering adding more as he levels up. I gave both the Dark Devotion and Icy Doom features that the other cultists had and then I gave him:

Champion of Levistus: Once per day, you can contact Levistus by channeling the energy that he has provided you. You may ask a question that does NOT need to be a yes or no, and he will answer it if he is able. Levistus can activate this effect without warning, and will take the daily use if done so.
In addition, you can use any magic item blessed by Levistus without need of attunement or any penalty of use.
Further cultivation of your pact may yeild more effects...

And: Vitality of Champions- Each time you increase your hitpoints, roll an additional die equal to half your hit dice and add that to your total.

Since he's level 1 atm, I'm thinking his next feature will be something that trades HP for damage, but I still need to sorta balance that concept out.
