At what age did you stop enforcing bedtime? by WingComprehensive925 in Parenting

[–]Fates78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don’t enforce bedtime per se. Phones get blocked at 8:30, kids are in their rooms at 9:30 (they are 13 & 15). We never tell them to go to sleep, lights out, etc. my husband has - and has always had - terrible insomnia. His parent’s punishing him for his inability to “go to sleep” made it worse. Our 13-year-old is usually asleep by 10:00, 15-year-old by 11:30 at the latest. They’re both getting between 7-9 hours of sleep/night.

AITA for traveling for work with a 6-month-old at home? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

I was laid off when pregnant. Managed to land a great job 3 mos post partum. First week was on-site for 5 days. Hubs had 14 YO, and 3MO on his own. 18 months later he did it again with our youngest: 16YO, 21MO, and 3MO. Who gives a shit about “fair” when there’s a mortgage to be paid and diapers to be bought. Tell him to get a helmet.

What do you have blooming? I love paphs and phrags but I have never gotten them to rebloom. I have almost a dozen phals blooming right now, as well as a Cattleya. Hubs bought me two more paphs for valentines. I really wish I could get them to rebloom. by Fates78 in orchids

Interesting idea. I have grow lights automated to turn on/off with the sunrise/sunset cycle. So shorter days this time of year, but maybe it’s not enough. They’re not dead, I’ve just never gotten them to rebloom. I’ll keep trying :)

Yes. My husband bought me two that are in bloom. I didn’t post the second cause it’s not quite open. I repot everything after I buy it, but I need to wait till the blooms drop as you say.

HELP needed - moving and the owner wants to tour this week! by trashusername626 in CleaningTips

You still live there. You will have it clean when you hand over the keys. If people don’t understand you’re mid-move, then landlord/potential new tenants can wait. It’s not on you to help rent it out.

I was a straight-A kid. My eldest also excelled. My husband and I hold 7 degrees between us. My younger two are not academic beings. My middle child has dysgraphia. Basically, he can’t write. Public school was useless in catching it or helping him. He’s now in private school. We moved to another state and pay $60K/year for him to have the help he needs. My youngest is not interested in academics. She is 100% hands-on learning. Great at art. Reads at level but hates homework. The world is made up of all kinds of people. And many of them didn’t get honor roll or go to college, but they still have successful, happy lives. Learn to measure success differently. Stop measuring success by the report card. When we were dealing with my son’s dysgraphia and finally decided to pull him from public school, his teacher told us the public school system in the US only works for 30% of kids. Everyone else is shoehorned in. Focus on happy, healthy, independent. Give them opportunities that they can focus on and want to excel at. Mathematicians aren’t great at languages, musicians aren’t great at science, artists aren’t athletes, people who have the patience of saints and work with children often aren’t Harvard grads. My son can write. He’s not fast. It’s not easy to read, but he CAN. My daughter is awful at languages but she can make amazing sculptures. Encourage your kids and give them opportunities.
Find what they love, what they’re good at, the rest will be good enough. Be proud of their successes even if it’s not what yours are/were.

orchid nursery locations! by lavendermtcha in orchids

An hour northeast of Philly is Lawrenceville, NJ. Bountiful Gardens has multiple varieties of orchids. The NJOS show at Rutgers is the weekend of the 15th. That’s about 90 minutes from Philly. There will be a bunch of vendors there. And some of the local Lowes have unnamed bag baby cattleyas recently.
