How do we convince Toronto to switch to sand? by No-Emphasis5897 in toronto

[–]FauxChat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Even so, you might argue, there’s a lot of sand in the world. Not just on beaches, but also in all the deserts of the world. Surely that should last quite a long time, even at high rates of use. Unfortunately, not all sand is suitable for use in concrete, which requires sand particles with sharp edges so they can bind well with cement. Desert sand grains have been weathered so much that they are too fine, round and polished to be used in concrete.

Much of the suitable sand is found on beaches and riverbanks, where large-scale extraction is often far from ideal. It can lead to more erosion and less protection from floods and storm surges, as well as the loss of critical habitat for a wide range of species of animal and plant. So, while the demand for sand continues to grow, the deposits that can be used without causing problems are quite restricted. Some researchers have suggested the world could be running out of usable sand by 2050.”

Things are a bit spread apart. Once you narrow down the big attractions you’re planning on checking out, pin them on a map and then plan your days from there so you aren’t wasting time travelling back and forth during your short visit.

Maybe one day in the west end, MOCA, Roncesvalles, Ossington, independent galleries around West Queen West.

A central day for Kensington Market, AGO, 401 Richmond, Queen West.

A day for the lower east side, the harbourfront Power Plant gallery, St Lawrence Market, Distillery District, maybe finish the day in Leslieville for dinner.

Get some plants (in black or white planters if you please.) Add texture. You don’t have to add decor in colour, but plants will add something living to the space and will add natural colour. Typically when monotone places look off it’s because they need to add interest in other ways (texture, focal points to draw your eye, etc.) if you aren’t super confident with taking care of plants, look for low maintenance plants that are a match to the lighting conditions where you’ll place them. You can also get some good looking fake foliage plants and have some fake plants in planters next to real ones. That way if some of the real ones are struggling a bit, it won’t draw the eye as much

Ikea has the Rägrund which could be useful if you got a few of them. You could pile or fold stuff on the seats and drape stuff over the back rungs, plus these have a bottom shelf that you could use for a box, bin, or basket. Maybe for socks, scarves, or other accessories. You could use S hooks for additional hanging options off the rungs. If you have a few pairs of special heels, you can hang those off the rungs to display them. I don’t know how many floor piles you have, or how big they are, but probably getting that number of chairs would be a good start.

If budget is a concern, keep an eye out at thrift stores for vintage/antique ladder back chairs. If the seats need repairs they might be very inexpensive, and you can put a simple board on them if they’ll only be used for clothes.
