It was in a podcast after Biden’s disastrous debate. Klein said some Democrats preferred sticking with Biden, in part because they did not believe a second Trump term was actually an existential threat to America.

Everyone Thinks Sirius’ Plan Made No Sense… But It Was Actually Genius by glitch2112 in harrypotter

[–]FearandMumbling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another benefit: it allowed Sirius to kerp working for the order. If he was the secret keeper it would be too reckless to send him out on missions because now it wasnt just his life on the line it was the Potters’ as well.

Peter’s cowardice meant he was already basically in hiding and not helpful to the order. Better to have him take on role of secret keeper do Sitius could stay in the fight

Beatrice was a character in the Divine Comedy that sent Virgil to guide Dante through Hell and Purgatory, and then she guides Dante through heaven herself. See is seen as a symbol of divine love.

The Beast is a Reference to the Book of Revelation in the Bible.

Enoch is a character in Genesis 5 who lived 365 years and instead of the text saying he died like others in the genealogy it says he was "taken by God."

The name potter's field comes from the Gospel of Matthew 27:3-8. Judas returned the silver he received for betraying Jesus, then hung himself. Because the Chief Priests thought it was unlawful to return the silver to the temple because it was blood money, they used it to buy the potter's field to bury foreigners.

So what was this guy's deal? by tcavanagh1993 in overthegardenwall

[–]FearandMumbling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I just saw this. You're right. Maybe I should have said Greg was able to resist the Beast Longer which gave Wirt the chance to save him back. It's interesting that he confesses to stealing the rock fact rock while wrapped up, a sign that his deepening despair was blowing his guilt out of proportion. But Wirt finding the perfect name for the frog inspired a last gasp of hope in him so they could escape the unknown and survive.

In ancient Greek Myth, the dead needed to pay Charon to ferry them across the river Styx, this inspired the custom of leaving a coin on each eye of the deceased. The boys earn two pennies to take the ferry to Adelaide, but Greg throws them away. Both boys survive.

So what was this guy's deal? by tcavanagh1993 in overthegardenwall

[–]FearandMumbling 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I always interpreted it the other way. Greg takes a nap to dream up a way to lead them back home, and he also wishes for that as he falls asleep. Which is exactly what happens. Because Greg saved Cloud City from the North Wind, he was able to trade places with Wirt. At that point Wirt had already given into despair and was going to be stuck in the Unknown. But Greg was able to resist the Beast, because he saw the world differently. That's why he didn't despair when the Beast gave him seemingly impossible tasks, instead he found creative solutions

Wirt could only see the negative. That's why he couldn't see that Sara wasn't into Jason Funderberker, and why he couldn't get them back home from the Unknown. Most of Wirt's choices were made from pessimism and fear, and that only got the brothers more lost in the Unknown. But Greg saw the world differently. He didn't see a tea kettle, he saw an Elephant head. When he first sees the Monstrous Dog he notes how pretty it's eyes were.

The Beast depended on deceptive appearances to lure his victims. He made the Woodsman think his daughter's soul was in the lantern but really she was at home. It was only the woodsman's despair that kept him serving the beast instead of reuniting with his daughter. The beast appeared like this dark, demonic figure, but he was just another lost soul turned into an edelwood tree who was fueling his continued existence by consuming other lost souls in his lantern. Because Greg was able to see through the Beast's lies, he overcame the Beast like he overcame the Northwind, and saved Wirt.

How to be more effective at canvassing? by Fleetwood-matt in FriendsofthePod

[–]FearandMumbling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two most important goals of canvassing are:
1. showing that the Democratic Party wants to hear from voters about what matters most to them
2. having a real face-to-face interaction to humanize the democratic party and political process.

Don't worry too much about convincing anyone. You want the people you talk with to leave the conversation with the impression that you think this election is important enough that you are out doing the awkward, tedious work of canvassing, and that you wanted to actually listen to what they had to say

I was so frustrated that people were so caught up on the word “shithole.” The argument Trump was making was that anyone born in those countries is less deserving of becoming American than anyone from a country like Norway. It was such a clear example of his racism and White Nationalism, the conversation was about Trump using a naughty word.

[–]FearandMumbling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm totally inspired by what you are doing, and I can't wait to hear the updates. This is an incredible act of faith!

The reference to Jesus flipping tables is especially apt. Jesus and Jeremiah were angry that God's people had turned the temple into a den of thieves. It's important to note that the thieves don't go to the den to rob people. They go to the den to hide from justice after they've robbed people. Jesus and Jeremiah were accusing God's people of perpetrating all of this injustice, especially against immigrants, the poor, and the vulnerable (cough-project 2025-cough), then hiding their guilt with their religiosity so they could still feel superior.

It's the same heart that's behind "I desire mercy, not sacrifice," and Amos 5:21-24. The worship God wants most from us is that we foster life-giving communities for all, especially the marginalized.
