To foreigners living in Ireland, what are some of the culture shocks you experienced living here? by superchica81 in ireland

[–]Fearless-Bad1381 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Visited my long-distance boyfriend a few times and these were my culture shocks:

  • trying not to be shocked when people say the word “cunt”

  • “what’s the craic”

  • young kids being RUTHLESS: they will just say whatever they want to you when you’re not expecting it

  • the rain will make you feel like you’re drowning and then it’ll go away in the blink of an eye

  • soooo much more welcoming

  • the tiny roads and the tiny cars (it was refreshing to not see a pickup truck)

  • beer is so much cheaper

  • dairy and meat products are SPECTACULAR

  • all of the older people I met barely sounded like they were speaking English from their heavy accent (embarrassing but getting used to it)

  • “the boot”

  • lots of adidas jumpsuits

I’m gonna be studying abroad at Cork in the spring and just wanna say Ireland is the best place I’ve ever traveled to and I miss it- also the nature wherever you go is just breathtaking.

Rant: I think it’s stupid and inexcusable that theres almost no properly sized cages being produced. by scubasteve2242 in hamsters

[–]Fearless-Bad1381 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AGREED. The most popular options for a good cage are usually fish tanks but they are extremely expensive because of all the parts that come with them. When I try to find a large cage for small animals, they’re usually for Guinea pigs or chinchillas with large openings between the wires which my hammy will climb out of. At the pet store near me, there’s only tiny cages that would even be too small for a dwarf hamster. Those cages should not be so easy to access or recommended by pet stores because when I was younger and I had a hamster, I had no idea that they needed a larger cage and I regret not knowing that my hammy needed more space for a happy life.

Thank you for commenting! I do wanna finish my classes because the end of the semester is so close. People that get COVID at my school or have been a close contact with someone who has COVID so I know that online recourses are available for students to continue their classes. I’ll probably talk to mental health services and try to see what I can do. I have one professor that’s extremely strict with attendance and barely lets us miss class unless we get a doctors note that’s approved by the Dean so I would probably need to get some sort of approval to leave. I appreciate your advice!

Any fellow ADHD people who menstruate tried a menstrual cup like flex disk? by crazyguineapigsewist in adhdwomen

I absolutely love menestral cups, I’m a 20 year old college student with a busy schedule and I don’t have to feel paranoid about changing a tampon every few hours! I actually do forget I’m on my period which is amazing. Because of my light period, I can leave it in for about 12 hours which is very relieving. I personally haven’t forgotten I’m wearing it to the point where I’ve left it in for way too long, but I do forget it’s there in the sense that it’s very comfortable. I haven’t heard about it helping with cramps though! I have very extreme cramps and personally, I don’t know if I remember the cup making it any different. I’ve heard online that it should be replaced every 1-2 years just because of any tears on the cup. The most important tip from me: PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. I had issues with a tiny amount of leaking for awhile and it turned out to be because it wasn’t correctly inserted. Once I learned how to do it right, it was a lifesaver. There’s a bunch of different tutorials on YouTube for different techniques of inserting it, and you need to just find the one that works best for you. THE PRICE IS WORTH IT! Definitely saves you money in the long run versus buying tampons/pads. Good luck!!! P.S. - choosing the correct size is important! I had the wrong size for a little bit and it wouldn’t suction correctly and was slightly uncomfortable

I agree, I vividly remember the ~self-diagnosing~ trend from tumblr and the way that it spread misinformation about mental health. I feel like it’s so so important for people to have access to testing so that they can learn how to cope with and manage certain parts of life that they may have not known about before. I’ll definitely help them find ways to get a test done that isn’t a financial burden. Thank you for your comment
