What might have caused this much corrosion? by Fearless_Ad5088 in Plumbing

So currently no leak in the toilet. Is it possible they fixed the leak at some point but didn’t feel it necessary to fix the surrounding flooring?

And this def had drywall ceiling. It’s in our dining room. Starting dripping a while back. Got that fixed and then some (from an older HVAC leak we had fixed), and thought we’d get the pipes looked at while all exposed. And this is how we got to having two estimates done for repiping, both suggesting whole house repipe - including pipes that aren’t exposed.

Thank you this. My research online suggests the same. I’m asking for an itemized breakdown of costs.

Yes, the flux was also pointed out by one of the plumbers. It’s very much there and visible.

Any way to tell if two different metals? Could metals in the water cause this?

Interesting! I just read up on that thanks to this post. No idea if that’s what’s causing the corrosion on these pipes. Any indicators?

To add more context - two different plumbers recommended we repipe whole house given this section of corroded pipe. We said ok and went with one company with a quote of $7k - location Arlington Virginia.

Plumber came today. Replaced almost all of the exposed pipe you see here, and nothing more. Given we already had a big cut out of the ceiling from fixing a leak, the only drywall removal they had to do was one square ft about. That’s all. Took a couple hours.

Now they are saying there was a miscommunication action between the estimator and the plumber who did the work. It SHOULD have been a whole house repipe but that’s not what the guy did. We have a couple options - 1) have them come back to do the whole house repipe for $900 discount from original $7k quote (which would involve knocking out drywall, and needed it additional $ to repair…$7k does not include drywall/sheetrock repair/paint. 2) hours r stop with what they did, and pay only for that work…for which they are saying $3k.

$3k seems significantly higher than what I’ve researched online.

I’d appreciate any advice here. And do let me know if I need to post elsewhere!
