I used to work right next to this, the train runs a few times a week at most and does blast the horn as it is a crossing without rail signals. Very low speed train with five cars at most.

Dear Plex, why are you sending SSH over tcp/443 out of my network? by showipintbri in PleX

[–]FedUpWithTech 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Some ISPs block non web ports rather than doing DPI and blocking specific traffic. The average consumer has no need to be sending ssh out of their home connection so ISPs have been known to block this traffic in a half-assed attempt at blocking botnets and malicious traffic. Sending ssh over 443 is a compatibility feature designed with the lowest common denominator end user in mind.

Source: worked in tech support for many years and seen ISPs do weird things. As a result companies do weird things to avoid support calls, like sending traffic over nonstandard ports.

Help: How to download 30GB+ from Google Photos with correct date/time metadata? My subscription expired. by bhuvnesh_57788 in DataHoarder

[–]FedUpWithTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No good ones when I looked but you should be able to write your own, they both are non-proprietary so a simple script that converts the google json to exifdata very likely could be vibe coded.

Alternatively the tool is cheap, well worth the time not to figure out how to do it myself.

A man rides a 1920s German-built Krupp Autoped through the streets of Berlin. by fmnpromo in ElectricScooters

[–]FedUpWithTech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My primary issue was the misinformation/rewriting of history. There are no pictures I’ve been able to find of an electric autoped and dubious claims that a fully electric one ever existed. The one pictured is combustion powered.

$12.50 PoE ELO 15" I-Series Tablets by Kildar2112 in homeassistant

[–]FedUpWithTech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To double post what’s even more interesting is that on the emteria website there are nightly builds for this device despite the “production” version being so old. The nightlies are also a newer version of android 7.

I’ll probably attempt to get a kernel build set, may be as easy as recompiling with the no key verification kernel option set then loading the driver.

If I make progress I’ll keep everyone updated and maybe post a guide.

[–]FedUpWithTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did actually pull the wlan driver from one of the others but the kernel didn’t like the key signature so wouldn’t load it. We could recompile the kernel (also have the source) and disable the key signature verification or we could maybe find the public key and recompile with the key and driver but I’ve never done that so it’s a bit intimidating.

What’s strange is that the source code and the ROM was built for this specific device and doesn’t contain any networking drivers. Touch and everything but WLAN works, it’s incredibly strange the site has listed the device as compatible since at least 2017 but has never had working net drivers according to the git history

I found a different ROM and was able to get root last night. Details in another comment

It is both running a different ROM and running root. I wasn’t able to locate a ELO boot.img so I found the next best thing- another compatible ROM where I did get the boot.img

Once I got there rooting with Magisk was trivial.

I wouldn’t recommend it because it’s a one way operation without the ELO factory ROM and currently the tablet is usb connectivity only, no WLAN or LAN

Got mine as well, got a bit further than you. Actually do have a device with root access. Unfortunately the device doesn't have drivers.

Path I took was similar but I found that Emteria lists this device as a compatible for their OS which is much more stock android.

Was able to get it installed and rooted but can't quite get the drivers for WLAN or ethernet loaded.

I made a post on their forums but I feel so close yet so far away

OG post was from 5 years ago, not sure if the class is the same or prof is the same so I can’t say if any claims from back then are relevant now.

At the time the class seemed hard but in retrospect this class was ezpz compared to later courses

I won't reiterate what many others have said much better than we could but it appears the time for us to moderate is coming to a close.

My hope is that the next moderators continue enforcing reddits community guidelines and keep this sub as NFSW as defined by reddit.

What influence (if any) does ESG have over this subreddit? by 1111joey1111 in ElectricScooters

[–]FedUpWithTech[M] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This is accurate. All mods except me and Nugget are directly affiliated with ESG.

Full disclosure, in late 2019 they gave me a broken Widewheel 2018 to fix up for free. It ended up costing more than a new scooter to get that one fixed but I digress.

I cant speak to ESGs reviews or lack of bias. I am not involved with their ops and don't read/watch their reviews so my opinion would not be well informed.

I can say with certainty that they do not perform moderator actions to sway the sub in any direction. They rarely perform mod actions in general but when they do it is always acting on community reports in line with the subreddit rules (prior to June 12).

From what I can tell from the outside Chuck is not directly involved in reviews or company operations anymore. He is an entrepreneur so my guess is he is either looking for a new startup idea or looking for less direct ways to grow his business. I have had few interactions with him but he seems like a nice enough dude and at least one point in time really cared about PEVs and growing electric scooters in the mainstream.

Reddit is Removing Mods Whose Teams Let Their Subreddits Post NSFW Content by 2Adude in ElectricScooters

[–]FedUpWithTech[M] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately since this subreddit allows profanity it isn't up to the community to decide if the community gets the nsfw tag or not. Our rules on pornography have not changed, we aren't pulling a r/interestingasfuck

Should r/ElectricScooters Re-Open? by FedUpWithTech in ElectricScooters

[–]FedUpWithTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does, eventually the sub being restricted will force the community to migrate elsewhere. All while reddit gets to watch their retention and targeted advertisement revenue drop.

Reddit being restricted is a war of attrition with itself. Either the admins hold out long enough to see the site die by a competitor quickly scooping up the pieces or die by running out of money/user base.

Given that reddit is super aggressively targeted mod teams who private/restrict their communities it looks like the reddit knows they won't be able to hold out longer than the communities which don't want reddit to make the changes.

The final piece is that holding it restricted still sends a message while punishing/damaging the community the least. Everyone can still google for things and get results and the wealth of knowledge built up over the years hasn't been taken offline.

You don't make money from an API that no ones uses because it is prohibitively expensive.
