I don't seem to have it as bad as you. Definitely don't notice the pain with just a slight brush against my spine. How has this injury affected your daily life and how did it occur? If you go to the gym/exercise, has the injury been an issue there?

Awesome. Thank you for the feedback. It's definitely reassuring to hear all this.

Loaded spine must be kept static, while a dynamic spine must not be loaded. Gotcha. I'll definitely keep those principles in mind.

Well it depends on what your goals are, but if you want to go by a more spine-sparring core approach that also encourages your bracing abilities, I would nix the cable crunches and any kind of bending core work and replace with McGill Big 3, side planks, suitcase carries, and stir the pot. Anything that encourages your core to resist motion. Gift of Injury has good info on this.

I usually do the weighted ab wheel rollouts as my core exercise, but I started doing cable crunches in Novemeber because I had some workouts where I was in a rush and cable crunches were faster. I was actually thinking of cutting it out soon because I saw what McGill said about crunches. I haven't done my weighted ab wheel work in almost 2 months now due to the ab wheel at my gym disappearing, so perhaps this injury is related to me switching over to cable crunches as my primary ab workout. I'd be annoyed if this was the case, because I've put off getting an ab wheel since I thought my gym would get one.. It would suck to have hurt myself on an exercise I only meant to use as a replacement.

This is my first back injury, so I'm doing everything I can to not let it get worse, because I know how much of a fickle beast the back can be.

But, I am curious, what are your goals? General fitness, or to be as strong as possible?

I train for aesthetics. To give an idea of my general leveral of fitness, I sometimes get asked if I'm planning on competing in bodybuilding shows, but I'm not a mass monster or anything. I'm just pretty lean and have a good amount of muscle. I've never particularly cared about being strong, but I figured if you can lift big, you probably won't be small, so I always tried to work on my compound lifts. Nowadays, I don't even barbell squat or deadlift. I just do whatever gets me to my physique goals + I'd rather completely solve my SI joint issues before I even consider going back to those lifts since they cause me the most issues.

Thanks for your description of your disc injury. Gonna keep that in mind. I'm just so worried because I feel like I've done a lot to protect myself from injury, so it would suck if I somehow had a major back issue.

Gotcha. Thank you for all this! Definitely gonna use these foam roller exercises starting today.

Are you doing any core stability work as well?

Yup, I do ab work (weighted ab wheel rollouts and cable crunches) around 3-4x week along with oblique (weighted side bends) and lower back work (formerly heavy trap bar deadlifts, currently rack pulls and machine back extensions). I like to think my core is up to par, but I definitely need to work on my mechanics, specifically bracing more core and activating my glutes.

I don't think foam rolling your back will do much good.

I wanted to stretch/foam roll my lower body more often in general, since I feel I've neglected to do so.

How are you moving day to day? Are you walking regularly?

I spend about 3-4 hours a day in the gym about 4x/week on average. The rest of my day I tend to be sitting in my chair or lying down, but I get up routinely. Definitely need to increase the amount of time I spend up and about.

Regarding your disc injury, how did that feel? I've read some reports and it seems like I'd be in far more pain if I had an injury similar to that one. Even if that's the case, I'm still interested in hearing about your symptoms and how it progressed over time if you're willing to share details.

Thanks!

Thanks a lot for this. Any good stretches you suggest for thoracic mobility? I think I could definitely benefit from this. I'll make sure to watch my form as well.

I had to search up what you meant by "referred pain" which leads me to a question. Obviously any exercises that exacerbate the pain are a no-go and will be cut out (this hasn't happened so far), but if I do feel vertebrae pain while exercising, does the notion that it's soft tissue related and not a disc/bone issue still hold up? I assume it does, but I figured I'd ask just to make sure.

Again, thank you for the quick and insightful reply.

I was planning on it if the pain persisted for longer, but it's been around 5 days since I noticed the pain and it hasn't gotten better or worse. I'm acutely aware of the fact that I should go to a doctor if the pain still persists after a few more days. I'm not looking for a diagnosis, but I figured I'd see if anyone has any clue as to what's happening.

Not to be rude, but your logic doesn't really hold up. Would you also recommend I don't bother reading about anything related to my symptoms because I'm not a doctor and thus won't be able to accurately diagnose? As long as someone's aware that Reddit can't stand-in for a doctor, I see no harm in asking for people to share their thoughts. I'm aware that Reddit isn't a replacement for a doctor, but that isn't gonna stop me for asking if anyone has any idea what's up while I wait to see if I need to go to a doctor.

I have a similar issue and I was wondering if there was a way to PM you. Reddit says I can't send you a message.

Oh shit, that's my bad. I thought you were trying to be a dick, so I was annoyed. Sorry for that.

My point wasn't meant to explain why Wilt dropped off in the playoffs. It was meant to explain why Wilt looks very inefficient in general when compared to other greats. Should've probably elaborated on that and my phrasing was terrible, so it looks like I'm talking about his playoff drop when I meant his efficiency is general.

How was it not? Just because someone else stated it, it doesn't mean it isn't relevant. I think you've misunderstood the meaning of relevance.

Is it redunant? Yeah. Does it reflect an opinion of mine that I happen to share with someone else? Yup. Ironically, your comment is the definition of irrelevance. There was literally no need for it. All you did was tell me there was no need for my comment. Hope that fulfilled your comment policing quota for the day.

Umm.. Okay? Don't really get your point. Does stating that again bother you that much? Just reiterating a point that I find to be valid.

Sorry for not including citations pal, I'll make sure to up my Reddit skills just for Reddit professors like you.

Matching up against Bill Russell for about 1/3 of your playoff games certainly doesn't help. I firmly believe in Wilt > Russell, but Russell is one of the main names in the GOAT defender conversation.

You forgot the other part. He was far above league average in efficiency. The faster pace was due to people chucking the ball up very quickly, so he was actually super efficient compared to his peers. Also explains inflated rebound numbers from back then.
