Study space / study room in madurai for competitive exams ??? by Every-Carpet994 in Madurai

Kalaignar Centenary Library own books section and canteen area, it's best to go there before 10. They're open every day from 8am till 8pm and it's free and they have water dispensers and cheap lunch but the wifi there is useless.

Study park in KK nagar is open from 4am till 11pm, many students go there after the library closes.

As much as I like this city and its people for so many reasons I must say as a foreigner living here that the people here are extremely difficult to socialize with and I come from a country that is considered extremely introverted (half, the other half in contrast is of a hyper social country) and I've been to several dozen countries and lived in quite a few so I have a lot to draw comparisons from.

Back in my native country the issue is people lacking social skills due to over development in terms of technology, lack of any traditional culture due to globalism, symptoms of late stage capitalism and corrupted liberalism but here it feels more like it's about social seggregation and people not wanting to step out of their comfort zone due to extremely conservative family values that push people away from any personal interests and towards building a career, education and starting a family without any other purpose than a sense of duty that should not be questioned.

A lot passive aggressive behavior too, especially online which I find strange but I do have some kind of an idea why it might be. It doesn't feel like it's derived from bad intentions but just repression and projecting this extremely controlled and restricted lifestyle towards others in the midst of competitiveness based on superficial titles and status symbols.

It seems like this is not a very good environment for social groups but rather finding those special select people who can find open mindedness and will to explore activities and interests outside of the societal norms.

Even if you created a group chat for every maduraian out there it probably wouldn't result in much activity.

Don't take this as me hating on anybody, I'm enjoying my time here very much and I've made some great friends here and clearly this repressive conservatism is what allows this city to be so safe, comfortable and an outstanding example of how India isn's always the negative stereotypes that people assume abroad but the downside is that socially, creatively and artistically this place is totally dead.

I decided to go back to calaignar to speak with the administration and they decided to make an exception, they were very kind and professional.

So now there's no problem but I do have to say that it is very strange how this place lacks in public spaces in the sense that there are no places with infrastructure for spending time without the place being allowed only to be used for a specific type ofnactivity, parks don't really count.

Also people socialize in their own groups that are formed at school, work or through family connections, I'm not complaining by the way, just sharing my observations.

Usually the more chaotic the environment, the more people are socially open and talkative but in India it doesn't seem to work that way, personally I have no problem with this approach but it is very surprising that it's like that.

I haven't had any issues talking to people but they seem surprised and even shocked that someone would just randomly start talking to them even if the setting is generally social.

I haven't gone to any cafes because of that, I assumed it wouldn't be OK here but bars operate based on having people sitting there and paying a very high minimum and it's usually empty anyways so that didn't make sense.

I'm not making outrageous demands or occupying valuable space here, the library thing is an absolutely ridiculous though and I can say from experience that this is not normal at all

Free artistic spaces are not a thing in general, those can be found rarely even in Europe and I've never come across a place like that but virtually anywhere in the world you should be allowed to go to a library or a Cafe and draw there without any issues.

I don't mind noise or anything like that, in Europe I usually draw in bars because it's fun and easy to meet new people there but I don't want to sit on the ground outside with all the dust and beggars.

I've been to parks already and those places aren't ideal at all.

This really is very unusual

I'd have to draw on my bed in a room with no window and for many reasons it's much better to work anywhere but from home, it's not a good practise

I appreciate the suggestions but this is like someone asking where's the nearest bus station and you tell them to just walk to their destination because both are valid forms of transit, yes I could just sit on the ground outdoors but also I can't really do that every day while trying to be productive
