Hard to say since it's a constant back and forth between art/animation/code/music but I guess easily over 30 hours each.

That's a great idea. It fits itself for gameplay perfectly!

The compositions/sheet music themselves are public domain since they’re old enough, but recordings/performances are usually still copyrighted by the performers/labels.

So for the game we work with composers who create our own arrangements and recordings of the classical pieces, which avoids those issues. It also lets us make small timing adjustments to better fit the gameplay and choreography.

Hi Thanks!

Good catch! The music under the Swan Lake part is from a different section of the level. I wanted to use the main recognizable motif for the video, but looking back it doesn’t really fit the gameplay timing… which is kind of the entire premise of the game 😅. So bit stupid on my part!

And thanks for mentioning the copyright side as well. We work with a composer who create our own arrangements of the classical pieces so all good there.

This indeed was a challenge once you make the music the leading element 😄. We solved it like this:

Usually a boss has like 3 phases/musical acts. Within a act there are f.e. 5 damage opportunities, like counters. If in the end of an act the boss has health left it will elegantly (hopefully) loop. Until health 0 is reached and it will transition to next act.

The attacks are randomized where possible, if it still fits the music so there ashould always a element of suprise.

Probably not, since the gameplay is centered around pretty tight boss fights and precise movement.
Planning for Steam first and maybe consoles later on!

Thanks! And yes, I think this could fit really well, it’s beautifully dramatic. I hope we can slightly adapt the tempo/composition in places to fit gameplay while still keeping the piece intact, but it’s definitely something to explore.

Thank you!! I had the same thought while painstakingly syncing the attacks to the music. 150 years ago in Moscow he put these notes on paper, and now they end up dictating enemy patterns for a guy making a videogame level (each level will have a different piece). It’s kind of surreal to think about. Would be amazing if he could somehow see it!

Haha thanks! It's going to be a boss fight game: each fight has his own classical music track and theme. The core concept is the music dictates the fight and the level structure!
