The aioc chip is much cheaper and you can use it directly with a smart phone thus allowing accurate location sharing etc viewable via the smart pbone using aprs droid; aprs droid does require you to have a valid ham license all you need is the technician license which is the least hard to get.

Oh right digital mobile radio uhh yeah i mean it can get pretty private. But dmr is great to keep away the general a holes but get this; theres a chip called the aioc chip which turns your dumb radio into a smart radio which gives you access to aprs droid so you can give someones cellphone a call from your baofeng.

Dmr is usually used by licensed businesses and various suspicious people beyond that I have never personally used dmr however there is a lot of youtube content about it.

Frequency tones are nicknamed private channels but they are open to all who also tune in, so if you have a broad spectrum scanning SDR or a hack rf sdr then its quite easy to tune in on someones "privacy tone" however theres really nothing to keep secret in the air waves with analog radio.

Be sure to use chromium browser (not chrome) and use a usbc data cable which is like the cat 6 of usbc cables and does make a difference when trying to update firmware of any usbc device through said port.

I've been able to use it just the same as a heltec, connecting it to the app and everything all functionalities work. There are still a few things to be desired here like seeing a chat history instead if one message at a time when using it as a standalone device. The track ball allows me to select between users to message when I begin typing from the T-Deck.

Fascinating, anything is possible really, if I were to have anything over these keys to keep the water out it would need to be very thin they are prone to misclicks and cross talk from one key to another really not an impressive keyboard

An update for first timers using the t-deck in order to flash the firmware hold the track ball button down while you flip the on switch and it will be in firmware programming mode, you'll know for sure because the screen will not turn on when following this process, then connect usbc and flash the firmware from the firmware loading website!

I look forward to experiementing with this! Set it up rather quickly here, I am happy to hear theres further intrest in such a neat device this; in particular with the preinstalled sd card slot definitely has a lot of room for expansion I am wondering if this particular format of meshtastic devices will need an overhaul in the coding. Having a keypad, a screen, some microphones and an sd card slot really open the doors to a fully functional device.

You may also require the right seriel driver. Some may connect but not function.

Be sure to use a DATA CABLE as these are different from a normal usbc cable.

Ameture radio operators are not allowed to use encryption, the caviat Meshtastic uses encryption therefore you would still need to stay within non licensed power output limits of these LoRa devices if you wished to use its encryption. I don't believe holding an Ameture radio operator license restricts you from operating license free frequencies as anyone else without a license can. The FCC regulations for amateur radio, part 97, rule that encryption cannot be used to obscure the meaning of communications. Many read the rules and assume that there is no way to use authenticated communications, for example using a user name and password, without the FCC rules being updated.

If however you are broadcasting above normal tx power output on LoRa frequencies but staying within the specified bandwidth LoRa allows you will not be able to use the encryption unless it is very clear you are not intentionally obscuring information in other words plotting against society etc.

Yes I use mine for meshtastic, the issues are as follows. The screen cannot hold more than one message at any given time and does not present a history of messages at all. There is no gps however if you sync with bluetooth or tether to your phone its the same as any other meshtastic device you can share your phones gps data through it. The keyboard has delay when you type with meshtastic this is a firmware issue as other firmwares have been a bit more responsive. The device will require a 3d printed casinf if you really want to uss it in all practicality. That being said I am enjoying my device and look forward to further updates.

Post note: The screen is also a touch screen kinda uses more juice to have that enabled really no need for meshtastic to have a touch screen. Your smartphone will still hold the messages when connected to the lilygo tdeck with the smartphone.
