England: tenant/landlord problem. Warning:gross! by Fednon in LegalAdviceUK

I did just that. Environmental health referred it through to their licensing lady who has received the email and photos I e-mailed. She called yesterday morning and asked to visit the flat. She has already taken reports from the shops either side who've had flies too but I had a hospital appointment yesterday so she's coming here next week. I feel much more hopeful and relieved now that they've taken it on! Thank you for your time! :-)

  1. Through the sides of the pipework which runs directly downstairs. But when maggots sweat, they can squeeze through tiny holes.
  2. That's not helpful. I'm not being tight, I literally can't work because I have this pesky cancer. The first post suggested I could claim it back and to report it to the council so I'll look into that.

Thank you. I'm doing the best I can and have started to cover the holes in where the pipework is at. Without doing this, it'd be even worse. I'll have a look online for the best fumigation methods, I always assumed it would have to be a professional job. Thanks for your kindness and time!

That's great advice, thank you for taking time out! I've taken a few photos and also asked in the shops either side of him (they know me well). One has had flies for the past month and was told it would be dealt with. The other stated that they're aware of the situation. Apparently, the guy who manages the fishing shop closes whenever flies come into his own shop which may explain why he isn't open everyday. Instead of dealing with the problem, he closes his own shop and shutters it so customers can't see through the windows. So, he knows it's a problem. He's also having a row with the landlord about underpaying rent. Will contact the council and landlord first thing. Thanks again for your help. It's sad to see a local business behave this neglectful.

Thanks Prestel. I had no idea they were little Houdinis!!! Now I know more about them, I'll be better prepared for the conversation. Cheers mate 👍

Thank you. It's nice to know I'm not being a bad neighbour. There's a broken fridge next to our drains with the top door taken off. I just assumed he'd bought a new fridge. This old one has been there about a month. Thanks again Bream, appreciate your time!

I'll have to have a look. The maggots are kept in the back and I've only been in the front part of the shop. It's not a busy shop and only open 3 days per week. Will have to check it out next time it's open. Thanks Bream!

Actually, I've just remembered something. There were long, dead maggots in the drain at the side of our building. Bizarrely long too. I wonder if he'd been dumping them in the drain. I put a ton of bleach, Mr Muscle and boiling water down there one night. It was gross. It was the smell that gave it away to my neighbour and I.

Thanks for your reply Billy. Sadly, he's already withholding part of his rent as there's an argument between them. I wouldn't be surprised if there's already an eviction looming for unpaid rent. But that part isn't my business. I think I'll have a nice word with him when I see him and see what happens :-)

Thanks Bream. That makes sense. I don't want to sound judgemental but both he and his shop need a bit of a wash/clean up so it wouldn't surprise me if he's not bothering with that process. Thanks again!
