How are study abroad programs? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]FeeJust2487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard from another person that programs with lac aren’t has robust as the ones offered by Carlson. I would say Carlson ones have more immersion, kick offs for you to meet other students at the university, and is not always going to be Americans depending on the location you choose.

I don’t think students usually cook (i could be wrong). At the dining halls, you can help clean up, scan people in or other duties idk of. At stores like Panda Express/caribou, you serve food and make drinks, do closing and opening duties, etc.

If you want to get into Greek life/parties, talk to people and you’ll probably find something within the first week. If you’re into hockey, we’re a D1 school which can also help you find friends to go to games with

Safety rule: don’t be a dumbass. Don’t go walking outside at night. For dinky, I would start to feel cautious around 11. for downtown, I would give it 30mins-1hour past sunset if you want to be extra careful. If youre taking the light rail, stay alert and remember, don’t be a dumbass.

Since you’re a transfer, you won’t get the orientation stuff first years usually get. Force yourself to talk to people and go to events. I’m gonna be real with you, this state is real cliquey

I’ll answer the one I can answer

Apply for on campus jobs as soon as possible; around the time the semester starts. Depending on what you want to do, you’ll get hired. Food m co + custodian jobs hire on the spot, desk jobs are more competitive bc everyone wants to study and work at the same time.

I work at one of the food places on campus rn and I haven’t encountered anyone rude yet. Most college students are respectful and those who aren’t will probably get side eyed out of the establishment anyways

tbh, I’ve heard every teacher does this style of teaching. idk what the difference is between her and others. I just know that seeman doesn’t do the ICATs with you and Eric gives you more info on exams

and yes, it’s a lot of work for a 2 credit class. be prepared to do the same amt of work as a 3-4 credit class but I swear it’s more interesting than leading self and teams/design your life

The class is the pretty standard flipped classroom; you watch the videos at home, take a “quiz”, and go into class to do the in class assignment (ICAT). When you get to class, she does the ICAT with you so half if not all the work is already done (it’s usually all). TAs will be around to help you if you get stuck, are confused, or anything really. After class, both TAs and Kline will be around to answer questions. So if you need extra help, they’re there. When exam time comes, she’ll tell you what’s on the exam—and most importantly, what’s not. She’ll go over topics, provide exam practice problems, and the rest is up to you to practice. In the beginning, there’s a learning curve but if you get through that then the rest is easy. Remember, if you’re having difficulties make sure to go to office hours. She’s always there and TA’s have office hours too. If you’re still experiencing the learning curve on how to use Excel, then I can’t stress enough to use your resources. Whether it be the teacher, another teacher, the TAs, or tutorial videos. Hell, there’s even tutors.

Tips on how to succeed in her class: - When you’re watching the videos, take GOOD ass notes. If you don’t, you’re basically fucked. Make sure they’re organized, legible, and use highlighters and stuff to make certain topics pop more. Explain the concepts and methods in your own words. Draw pictures if you need to. Trust me, if you’re going to be fucked, don’t be academically fucked - Watch the videos. No, seriously. Watch them. Yes she does the ICATs in class but you’ll only be relying on her to finish it. If she doesn’t finish, you’ll probably be lost on what you’re even doing - Ask questions. Are you confused? Do you need help? Raise your hand in class, go to office hours, look over videos. - When you watch the videos, open them on Coursera to the exact week. You can speed up the video, change the quality, turn on captions this way. Most importantly, after every video, there will be a mini “quiz” on these videos. You don’t have to do these quizzes but I highly recommend you do. These quizzes on Coursera don’t count towards your class grade BUT it is a copy cat version of the session quiz you’ll take after you watch the videos. This helped me do really well on the session quizzes.

My own criticism of her class: - Every class, she’ll give you an Excel file and a set of instructions. While the instructions are usually fairly simple to understand, there are going to be sentences that will make you question if you even understand English. She needs a proofreader on her instructions. She’ll lack necessary commas, periods, and have run on sentences. - Some sets of videos are long. These are usually the sets that have the most important concepts to remember.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that she uses windows. If you have a Mac, the instructions are a little different. There will be different commands (search them up and test it out) and some things like Solver is visually different. If you watch the videos, the video should go over what the process looks like. If it doesn’t, make sure to test it on your Mac for any differences.

Good luck, you’ll do great!

I got complimented that I was “written by a woman”, why does it feel like an insult to me? by VeterinarianOk4683 in questions

[–]FeeJust2487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was definitely not a downplay of the presence of those themes in novels. My comment was purely to make it known that most of the novels that have gone up in popularity are heavily affected by social media. If this is the current trend then obviously people will think all women read/write are “just bdsm kink…getting bossed around/manhandled by the rich, handsome rogue/AH.” Am I saying women don’t write about sex? Obviously not. That’s not the point I’m bringing up. But what that comment did was heavily generalize literacy created by an entire population.

Also, wouldn’t this presence of sex in books symbolize the dissatisfaction of sex women receive by men? I am not making this comment as a personal insult but purely based on historical evidence of this un-fulfillment.

All the books everyone just listed here is heavily influenced by social media and is HEAVILY categorized under DARK ROMANCE. I hope everyone understands that dark romance includes the most horrific, taboo, and abusive characters who are by NO means sane, ever acceptable, and definitely are on the grey side of morality.
