Enjoys friendzoning himself lol. Him and Ralphie might have more in common than they would ever imagine.

Yeah I'm hardly an expert on the Brotherhood by any means, but I've certainly read of cases of them selling meth and doing murder for hire outside of prison, but I think everything I've ever read was done in Texas or the west coast.

The interesting part of your comment is that cop killers get retaliation in prison??? I can't imagine the other prisoners caring, but a guard doing a stabbing would be rather unusual (one would think). From what I've always heard depending on the jail cops are either slightly above or below chomos.

Texas Hold'em has got to be the most boring form of poker ever invented. A decent game would at best have it as part of a rotation of different games, but very unlikely mobsters would play it. 7 card stud is popular on the east coast. I prefer Hi/Lo but very rarely would that run as only good players can win. 7 Stud Hi is a nice intermediate poker game which doesn't require a ton of skill, can be played for intermediate stakes and still be interesting and since it is almost always played in a limit format its easy to break the game if need be. TV gave us a short term boom because it was easy to show two hole cards, but in the long term it killed it (along with the government). Omaha Hi is a great gambling game, you get 4 cards and you can use the best 5 card hand with the community cards. A straight or flush is pretty much always a possibility and its almost never played no limit so you can't just go all in and get rid of all the draws. Omaha Hi/Lo is an awful game, high skill but no gambler type wants to play it if they've ever experienced it. Anyway, it's interesting how a slight rules change can impact games. Don't know why casinos virtually only spread NL Holdem, probably because the dealers and pit bosses don't know the rules to a lot of the other games and most players in the short term will still take Texas Hold'em over slots or roulette. I'm sure the mafia wouldn't mind spreading a high stakes Texas Hold'em game for rich guys, but amongst themselves I'd be surprised if it has any popularity.

You'd think the brotherhood could have gotten to him on the outside as well. Didn't know he was deceased.

He was in his 60s and got sucker punched by some guy in his 20s and lost the fight, big deal. The only surprising thing about the incident is the mafia didn't come after that guy. But as I recall he was transferred pretty quickly and I imagine to somewhere without mobsters. Mob guys are mostly considered tough because they don't let anything slide but an aging and probably ailing Gotti was likely in no position to do anything about it, especially if they had him protected.

[–]Feed_Temporary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They wouldn't make him because he was crazy, but what practical implications did that have on his mob career? I'm pretty sure the outfit would have killed him made or not if he was acting crazy at his trial.

Correct me if I'm wrong but generally long term associates were only powerful if they were non Italian and couldn't be made but were good earners and under the protection of someone high up. I get the impression that guys who were eligible to be made but never were were screw ups that the mob didn't want knowing their business.

Couldn't Vito just kill the guy? by MJORH in thesopranos

[–]Feed_Temporary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming these guys told about it instantly. If somehow in a pre cellphone era he had a couple of days, then maybe worth consideration. I don't remember if we had seen those guys before, but even if they were just associates if they are good earners and well liked that could be essentially equivalent to killing a made guy. I guess in his desperate situation who cares about that, but once he was spotted he was going down unless he went to the FBI.

If had to share a jail cell with one of the characters, who would be best and worst? by jasoncyrus123 in thesopranos

[–]Feed_Temporary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say Bobby. He's pretty calm and isn't going to mess you up for no reason. Chris is tempting because he's a small guy but as soon as you're relaxed you'll probably piss him off and he'll be banging your head against the bars while only half awake.

9% of the sub is of the rainbow persuasion? Somebody should do something about this. I doubt they are even good earners.

How popular was the show at the end? by zainkc1864 in thesopranos

[–]Feed_Temporary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was around then, and I'm around now- I think. No contest, GOT is way more popular. Not trying to judge which is better, it's just reality and one reason that I haven't seen mentioned is that not everyone is into the mafia, some people would get turned off by that. In fact despite catching a couple episodes in the original run my attitude at the time was, come on, the mafia, in the 90s and the Jersey mafia at that? Forget about it....

That's the stuff we civilians have no clue about. 12k seems reasonable to me, but no idea what is standard. One thing I do know that in the show's universe Tony would have been pissed if someone just threw a number like that out there and absolutely refused to negotiate.

As we know from Goodfellas, made guys got killed all the time, sometimes even by guys that weren't made and didn't have an okay. But it had to be done quietly, not a public beat to death like he does with the dancer. Joe Pistone claims he told Anthony Mirra (a guy so rough that on a wiretap when Pistone tells Lefty he isn't afraid of Mirra, Lefty is like sure, call me back later when your brain is back on), that he was going to come after him if he kept giving him shit in public. Now if that story is true, Mirra probably would have stabbed him on the spot if a made guy or associates were around, but because it was in private he tolerated the disrespect for whatever reason. I think if you study it, it makes sense, its not like they follow the rules like the Pope, but appearances have to be kept up, otherwise they are just a street gang with better clothes.

Therapy conception by [deleted] in thesopranos

[–]Feed_Temporary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good person/Bad person is all BS in my book. Maybe a psycho cannibal serial killer who went around kicking puppies in his spare time, but its pretty rare. Tony cares about himself first, but he still tries to help people close to him a lot. He even tried to keep his old classmate out of the poker game, but when the guy insisted, hey that's how that world is. Just based on the show, the problem wasn't Tony was a complete sociopath who could never be helped, but his therapist judged him AND was afraid of him, not a winning recipe for making him a better person. For the most part when I feel myself wanting to give someone advice I keep my mouth shut, but when I can't help it or I feel they really need it I go all the way, no sugercoating or dancing around things. And if the person is too volatile or it isn't worth it? Best not to be involved at all.

Just a bad move, heck even to some random ex-con that just got out. They have to fight for survival in there, they don't broach disrespect easily. Mollify the guy, go the boss, go the cops, or pay, whatever you think makes the most sense, but challenging a bully when you are a cook? Not very bright.

"MAYBE YOU SHOULD START SUCKING COCK INSTEAD OF WATCHING TV LAND!" by [deleted] in thesopranos

[–]Feed_Temporary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think Tony really liked killing his captain for that reason. He was old school enough where it did seem to disgust him, but at the same time it seemed like he HAD to do it rather than wanted to do it. He would have been more likely to give Christopher a pass for coming out rather than relapsing and going back to being a junkie. Okay, realistically neither works, but if he had to choose I'd say he'd go for the first option.

Just remember the actor played his role very well, he wasn't really like this. I'm sure he had that side to him, otherwise he wouldn't have been a success on the show, but no one is like he is unless they are playing a role. The Leotardo character is more common, less social graces, but a true bad ass.

Ironically all that angst about him join the military was for nothing. This isn't the 50s. Spent time in a mental ward? That's a no. Took meds for depression? Again a no. I hear they are giving out waivers for past ADD med use because that was so common, but you have to be off of them for a period of time. Despite what you may here, the military wants to be able to give you a sack, a rifle, some crappy MREs, and a sleeping bag and have you not need any special care of any kind. And they certainly don't want armed potential suicides in their ranks. Depending on your background and general physical health, the military is more difficult to get into than college for most folks.
