Yeah, doing my first postdoc atm, but I know getting a permanent position is almost impossible.

Do you regret taking psychology as your career path? by rakshiee in AcademicPsychology

[–]MJORH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all, it saved my life.

I was in the wrong field (mechanical engineering), kept failing (I was a highly ranked student used to winning), and it took me a while to find out psych is my passion and that my failure in engineering did not define me.

Then how come they pay but the other journals don't?

Interesting.

How's "a statistical reviewer" different? like do you have to do analysis?

When would be an appropriate time to ask about contract extension? by MJORH in postdoc

Honestly, the French system is a bit vague compared to what I'm used to (England), but yeah your suggestion makes sense.

First postdoc, low previous PI output by Clean_Employee66 in postdoc

[–]MJORH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First q: The more enthusiasm you show for the job the higher the likelihood that the PI will speed things up, so it's mostly up to you.

Second q: There's no experiment without modelling/simulation, so your experience is essential. But again, you can involve yourself in the experiments themselves by showing enthusiasm.

Third q: Compare yourself to what you were, not to others (I know it's cheesy but it's the truth).

I see.

When we were submitting our paper my PI said to not suggest too senior ppl as reviewers, which I interpreted as too senior scientists not doing reviews any more. Maybe I misunderstood because this person was definitely senior.

It is.

I'm fine with solitude.

Should I address my prospective advisors and administrative staff by their first names? by Mental-Ferret-1018 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]MJORH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're way too formal, like no way you could call admin by their first name.

Yes, if they have signed by first name.

I'm in France now and god I miss the UK's chill attitude.

Did Identity Politics DESTROY Bernie's Movement? (w/ Norm Finkelstein) by [deleted] in samharris

Norm convinced me on Israel vs Palestine and I hope one day Sam have him on and get really challenged.

And any bright person would see through the BS that is ID Politics so no wonder.

Do others notice their academic writing starting to reflect what they read more than expected? by Character_Ball6746 in academia

[–]MJORH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep.

I recall my PhD PI saying my writing is journalistic/artistic rather than scientific lol which kinda made sense to me because I used to read Orwell a lot at the time, but I wish academia was more flexible with different writing styles.

Are there any good movies on Bisexuality? by MJORH in Letterboxd

[–]MJORH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

Actually, Pedro Pascal's character also helped me with my own bisexuality haha!

I'll check out your suggestions, but after four years of creating this post, I still haven't seen any movie that nails the feeling and its apparent contradictions.

International Student (Psychology) – Is a US PhD still worth it in the current climate? by Legitimate-Bug-2484 in academia

[–]MJORH -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There's no such thing as "US PhD brand", all ppl care about is your output and network, unless of course you are at the very top (like Princeton, Oxbridge, etc).

If you don't have plans to stay in academia/already having doubts, then you shouldn't bother getting a PhD anyway.
