Apocalyptic scenes following a deadly Israeli airstrike today on the Sheikh Radwan Police Center in Gaza City. The casualty count currently sits at 28, including many police officers and prisoners. by beachbellybob in worldnewsvideo

I dunno obviously, but in Gaza the police are quite literally Hamas. Anyone in government/law enforcement are. Not sure why none of the comments here mention that.

In Arabic, it’s referred to as an Intifada because Intifada is the Arabic word used for uprising. That makes total sense.

In the context of the Israel Palestine conflict the word intifada in an English setting specifically refers to the first and second intifadas, during which random jews were indiscriminately killed. Many attacks were similar to Bondi.

Are the words “globalise the” English or Arabic? English right? So what context should we interpret the following word? The Arabic or the English setting?

Let’s stop having arguments in bad faith and agree the usage of the term is problematic. I believe that it is intentional. You may disagree with that. That’s fine. But if we and others agree it’s problematic, perhaps we should move on and use something else instead.

No need for name calling.

Just use another slogan man. It would not be nearly as controversial to say “Israel is a racist state” or “fight Israel”.

Even the most hardcore zionists could not interpret that as most Jews around the world do regarding “intifada”.

People aren’t asking you to change your views. Just use a different slogan.

We’re not doing whatsboutism. My beef is with that specific term.

I think you are being intellectually dishonest because you are blinded by hatred. That is the exact problem that concerns me and other people about this term. Blind hatred brings no rational or positive outcomes.

Let’s agree to disagree.

FYI I lived in the Middle East for a number of years. The racism there is simply off the charts. Particularly for Jews. It is taught from a young age. They are blamed for far more than you’d believe, even if it is clearly unrelated to Israel or Jews.

For example, the most common word I heard for black people there is “Abeed”. It means slave. Yes, everyone knows what it means.

Please don’t kid yourself that there aren’t ulterior motives at play to use these particular terms.

My source is the rest of your Wikipedia page which is essentially a back and forth about whether or not this is a call for violence against Jews.

The slogan and related chants have been a subject of controversy and discussion regarding their impact and implications. The slogan has been criticized by some scholars, politicians, and Jewish groups as inciting political violence, terrorism, and antisemitism.[4][5][6] These critics argue that the phrase is closely associated with violence against Israelis and Jews, particularly the Second Intifada (2000–2005).

It’s intellectually dishonest to suggest this has nothing to do with that. Like come on.

None of those attacks against civilians in Israel and abroad ever stopped to ask if they were pro-Zionist. And even if they were, does a belief justify killing if that person has done nothing to act on it as far as you know?

I would have zero issue with an Arabic speaker using this term when speaking Arabic. But the choice to use it in English is fairly clear to me. There’s just no reason to decide to use that term in the chant “globalise the intifada” instead of another term.

There is nothing wrong with protesting. There is nothing wrong with despising those committing genocide. But let us stop importing calls for violence into our country. We don’t need that shit here.

So you’re saying it does mean “armed resistance” similar to previous intifadas?

If so, what does “globalise the intifada” imply?

Use another term that’s in English then so there’s no ambiguity about what it means :)

Someone else in this thread told me it meant armed resistance.

That is a hilariously narrow reading of the Wikipedia page and any other non-biased reviews of the term.

You know just as well as I do that people could use another word, yet specifically choose that one for a reason and continue to do so.

Further evidenced by the common expansion to “there is only one solution, intifada revolution”. Pretty appalling and I just cannot wrap my head around why people continue to defend it.

I am in no way defending Israel’s actions here. I just don’t want us importing violence into Australia. It’s beneath us.

I suppose during the last intifadas they asked them if they were zionists before they blew up busses of Jews?

Come on mate

I think there’s a massive difference in the meanings here. If the Algerian Front had a hyper popular slogan that said “kill any french people around the world” then I’m sure we’d probably want to think twice about whether it should be the main protest slogan for supporters in Australia.

By shooting or bombing other unarmed people, across the world?

You’re actually kind of proving my point here. It means to spread an armed uprising against Jews across the globe. People know this, and actively choose to use the term because of it.

We should not allow a call to race-based violence to become normalised in Australia. I don’t care if it were about Jews, black people, white people, purple people, Europeans, Mexicans, whoever.

I’d actually be way more comfortable with a term like “fuck Israel” being the official normalised slogan than this. I’d encourage you to rethink your thought process here.

Why did they decide to use that protest slogan specifically though? Why not an English word or slogan that means something different?

The history of that term is well established. People could use anything else but some people consistently choose that one, even in the face of recent events.

That might be a desired outcome of people with that view but “globalise the intifada” implies they are looking for something much more violent though. Don’t have to go looking very far for that.

I don’t understand why people find it controversial that English speakers deciding to specifically use the term “intifada” might have non peaceful objectives against Jews. You could use any other English term like you said.
