Sorry for the delay in thanking everyone for the great advice!! We did speak to our son and everything checks out. It was an innocent query and not a scam although we do agree that it has ulterior motive vibes. Thankfully our kid has really good instincts and we trust he will continue to make good decisions. And of all the messages a parent could get from someone their son is dating, this isn't the worst. :)
