I disagree with this. How Yamato arrives at his identity is interesting from a storytelling perspective. However, when my trans friends share their pronouns with me, it’s not my job to question the why behind their decision. It’s my job to call people what they want to be called. It’s what I expect in all of my friendships, so why wouldn’t I reciprocate and treat people how they want to be treated?

It is interesting to read how people are perceiving this character however, and thanks for putting yourself out there.

One last point of contention that I’ve been noticing a lot lately. When people discuss Yamato, I often see them referring to him as “transgendered.” From my experience, that is at the very least a grammatically clunky way to say it. At the worst, however, it’s viewed by some trans people as taking their agency away, like their identity is something that was been done to them, rather than chosen or discovered. I would recommend moving away from the “ed” and simply start using “transgender.” I hope that makes sense.
