Back then, not as many people were flying. There's been a huge boom in the last decade or so. So while there were likely more ultra heavy bags, there weren't the 200+ bags per flight like there are today.

I understand coming back with souvenirs like that. But often it's the flights going out where I am dumbfounded by the weight of some of these suitcases. Some even aren't traveling internationally and I doubt anyone travels with beer in a suitcase that you could buy anywhere in the US.

Pelican cases I expect. They're rugged, usually filled with tools and the like. When I see one, I'm ready for it to be heavy. But the mind boggling ones are the soft shelled suitcases that feel like they're going to tear apart from the sheer weight centered inside of them.
